If I Wanted To Own My Own Fitness Gym What Would I Major In College?
![]() |
Im in high school now but i wanted to start planning and getting ideas of what i want to do. I was thinking of starting up my own fitness gym and doing something with nutrition and dietetics. Any suggestions of what i should major in or what colleges would be the best choice? I live on the east coast now but i am open to going anywhere. California would be my first choice ![]()

It depends on what exactly you want to do. If you intend to work at your gym as a trainer or nutrition counselor, you’ll need to be qualified to do that. This would be kind of like having your own practice as a nutritionist or something, with enhanced facilities for your clients to work in. It would also probably have lower start-up costs since you could start smaller and maybe wouldn’t have to hire many employees. However, if you wanted to expand you would eventually need to hire people.
If you want to own the business and run it, hiring other people to work directly with your customers, then you should make sure to take some classes in small business management or entrepreneurship, but you don’t have to actually major in them unless you want to. As an entrepreneur, nobody is going to be judging you based on your major, it’s not like you have to meet an employer’s requirements. Just take all the courses that you think will teach you something valuable about either fitness or business, and major in whichever one you find most interesting.
look for the best fitness schools. i go to Univeristy of La-Crosse in Wisconsin. its widely reconized around the Mid West as one of the best fitness schools so they have great fitness programs/ sports managment and physical education programs. and they have good buisness classes as well so alot of people i know will either double major in fitness and buisness or major in one and minor in the other. if your set on East Coast look around at the websites of what the colleges programs are all about.
If you are planning to own and run a business, I advise that you take business courses. Take minors or classes on nutrition, etc. but unless you know how to actually run a business, the odds are against you making it work.
