If You Exercise In The Morning, Should You Eat Before You Work Out?

By Diet | Jul 11, 2009

I wake up every morning at 8 to exercise. Should I eat something before I workout? If so how long should I wait after eating to exercise? I don’t really have time in the morning so Im planning on just waking up and working out on a empty stomach.
Any opinions?

I don’t like to eat and then work out. I think you should get up in the mornings and walk or work out first. If you take supplements read the label. Some will tell you to take the supplement, then work out and eat after that. Good Luck!

You should eat something on the light side like a slice of whole wheat toast before exercising, or a banana. Nothing to heavy if you are going to exercise.

Technically, you’ll get the best results if you wait around 2 hours before and after a workout to eat. Or at least that’s what I’ve been told to do.

I read somewhere that you shouldn’t eat 2-3 hrs before you exercise. When I exercise in the AM, I drink some water before my workout, during my workout, and after my workout. Then, I usually eat a very filling healthy breakfast.

If you are doing only CARDIO Di it on a empty tummy.. more burn. but follow it with a good meal within a 1/2 hour.
If you are weight training do a meal 30 minutes to an hour before your work out & a light snack after if you are hungry.

if you are doing cardio drink tea or coffee first. that way you burn off your fat
if you do weights eat something before so you dont burn muscle.

You might want something to drink. Otherwise, I would recommend not eating before exercise, for the same reason it’s not recommended to go swimming right after eating.
    Good luck!

I am not an expert by no means!! I just am an avid Tennis player.
I never eat before I play tennis in the mornings. I don’t like eating breakfast. How ever when I have been in tourneys I will take snacks to eat inbetween sets to keep my energy level up.

2 things you should do before working out. I have 3 things I have to do.
    1. You should eat something…cereal, pancakes with applesauce…something with carbs in it.
    2. You should do 5 minutes of stretching before you exerice.
(me? the 3rd thing…I have to shower to warm up).
Which reminds me…always warm up first..

I eat before working out in the morning. Your body has been fasting for several hours and needs fuel. Eat a piece of fruit…wait 10 mins and do your work out. Be sure to re-fuel with whole grains after your workout.

I think that you should eat something light at least if you were to do some hardcore exercise.
I remember I was sent to the hospital for over-exerting myself. I loss conciousness. The doctor told me I should have eaten before doing such an intense exercise.

If you’re exercising in the morning, you should be eating within the first hour that you’re awake. Whether it be a total breakfast (not completely recommended if you’re doing a full workout – cardio/weights) or a bowl of cereal or fruits. But yes, you should be eating SOMETHING!!!!!!

It’s better to have a small snack, like a protein bar, before working out. Keep in mind, your body hasn’t eaten anything for several hours, and your likely to either get a sour stomach or over eat after your work out.

Working out on an empty stomach is not going to hurt you. If you are concerned about eating then working out you should do the swimming rule. Don’t drink lots of water or other liquids before you do. Especially if you push yourself to the max. You could get sick. If you do eat, eat a stomach filling breakfast with nutrients. You can cut time by just having a fruit shake or the other nutritional shakes out there. Again use moderation. Never eat a meal before working out. A snack like a apple or banana, a ganola bar is fine.

I usually eat a light meal half hour before working out. for instance a banana and yogurt or just almonds and raisins.
