Individualized Diet and Exercise Plan

By Diet | Jul 9, 2009

When it comes to weight loss, diet and exercise plans are not a one-size fits all proposition. For your plan to be the most effective, you will need an individualized diet and exercise plan.

When considering how to devise an individualized plan, there are several questions that you first need to answer.

How much weight do you want to lose?

Whether you want to lose 5 or 50 pounds or even more, you need to set a goal. Since your mind functions better when you know what you are after, by setting this goal you give it something to strive for. Plus you can come up with a rough estimate of how long it may take you to lose the weight.

What is your level of fitness?

By knowing your level of fitness you can determine what exercises you can do and the level of intensity you can use. If you are a sedentary person, then you do not want to start your exercise program by immediately jogging. You will need to build up to that by walking, then increase the intensity. The same goes for other types of exercises.

Of course, the better the shape you are in, the more intense your workouts can be, which leads to more calories being burned.

How much time do you have to devote?

Diet of course is a 24-7 commitment. However, how much physical activity you can devote to your diet plan plays a big part in how quickly you will lose the weight. All things being equal, someone who can devote a hour for exercise in the mourning and the evening is going to lose more than someone who can only devote 30 minutes a day.

If you can’t spend as much time as you would like, that’s okay. Just realized that it will take a little longer for you to drop the pounds, so don’t become discouraged.

Do you have any health issues?

As it effects what physical activities you can perform and what you can and can’t eat, health issues such as diabetes, heart conditions, injuries, and other ailments will have an effect on your ability to lose weight. Keep this in mind when sorting out expectations of your plan.

Also, to avoid making your health issues worse, when appropriate always get advice from your doctor or a health professional before you start your diet and exercise plan.

Once you have answered these questions, you can now tailor a plan to fit your individualized needs. Along with that, the answers may help you to avoid setbacks by foreseeing stumbling blocks that may occur, and also give you a rough estimate of how long it will take you to lose the weight.
