
If you’ve been reading a lot about Medifast or other diets, you may have run across the word ketosis. When I was initially evaluating Medifast, ketosis was a huge, scary mystery to me. I wondered if ketosis was harmful to the body, how my body would feel in ketosis, and how I would know if I had really achieved it. After a lot of research, I finally got a good understanding of what ketosis is or isn’t. I’m going to share my findings on ketosis in this article. Keep in mind I am not a doctor. This is just my own interpretation from my own reading, research, and from my personal experience.
Ketosis is basically when you can convince or fool your body into burning its own fat or stored glycogen. Ketosis is a metabolic stage that occurs when your liver is no longer faced with stored glycogen and your your body then thinks you are fasting and switches to fasting / fat burning mode. Ketosis is normally seen in higher protein diets since you’re no longer feeding your body foods that store excess glycogen. The great thing about Medifast is the snack foods and shakes taste like desserts or carbs, but they are actually very high in protein and they encourage ketosis.
Ketosis isn’t as grave or as hard on your body as it sounds. Quite honestly, when you are actually in ketosis, your body feels suprisingly good. You don’t feel shaky, irritable or ravenous as you may have on other diets. In fact, in ketosis you will find that you actually feel satisfied, full, and you probably won’t be obsessing about or thinking about food the way you may have in the past. In a nutshell, ketosis kind of takes cravings and deprivation out of the equation.
You can actually measure if you are in ketosis by purchasing ketone strips which will check your urine to measure your body’s ketosis state. You can get a pretty decent sized bottle for about $5 at any drugstore. These strips are usually housed in the diabetes or diabetic section.
When I was first reading about ketosis and Medifast, it honestly turned me off. Ketosis is not an appealing sounding term. But once I educated myself, I realized that ketosis was really where I wanted my body to be. I realized if I could get my body in ketosis, it meant that I would probably lose weight as never before. This turned out to be absolutely true.
If you’re researching diets and ketosis, don’t let the phrase scare you. It’s actually a very friendly place to be and if you can get there it is going to help you turn your body into a fat burning machine.
