The Best Diet of 2009

It’s early in the year, but we are already asking about the best diets of 2009. Despite the overwhelming number of entries, the same contenders seem to be at the front of the pack. Why, with so much evidence to their shortcomings, do we all flock to them in ever-increasing numbers? That’s a tough question. Perhaps we follow anyone in the absence of a true leader.

Low Calorie Diets Do Not Work

Perhaps if we starve ourselves of carbohydrates, which are an essential macro nutrient, we can trick our bodies into burning some fat when we first go on these diets. That’s great! The problem is that our bodies also need these carbohydrates for energy. That’s no big deal … as long as we don’t have jobs, kids, or a home to maintain. Another problem is that when we finally start eating carbohydrates again, which we will be starved for, our bodies kick into high gear and store those new calories as fat. So, which low carb/no carb diet will be the Best Diet of 2009?

Low Fat Diets Can Be Dangerous

We all know that if we eat nothing but calorie-dense foods, such as pizza, burgers, cakes and cookies, our health will deteriorate quickly. The alternative seems to be to eat foods at the other end of the spectrum and live on foods better suited for rabbits. Nobody would suggest that fruits and vegetables are bad for you. The problem is what we add to them. Check out the label on that “healthy” bottle of low calorie dressing you put on your salad. How much sodium does it have? How about “healthy” fruit drinks? How much sugar per serving? That is not exactly “healthy”, but one of these programs will probably be voted the Best Diet of 2009.

There Is A Better Way

Thankfully, there is a common-sense method available to help us get rid of some of that unwanted fat. The key to losing fat in an efficient manner is not to drastically change your eating habits. The key is to work WITH your body and provide it with the food it needs when it needs it.
