What Is The Best Fitness Plan For A Very Bad Knee?
![]() |
I am overweight, losing, with no fitness plan at present. I hate walking, and my knee swells from arthritis when I walk for any extended period of time. So for every 30 minutes I walk (even in a mall shopping) I spend an hour with my knee elevated and iced. I would appreciate any suggestions. I am in my early 50′s.

Swimming, absolutely fantastic for weightloss. But you do need to attend to your diet as well. Low cal low fat diets don’t always work and can make you store fat as your body thinks it is starving – unless you also increase your fibre and protien intake. A really easy way to do this is through protein shakes, fully nutritious meals in a glass. Will help you reshape your body and add lean muscle. And fill you up. Click my name for my website. It’s great that you want to start a fitness plan! Studies have shown that regular exercise helps alleviate the symptoms of arthritis.
You should first discuss this with your doctor or physical therapist and see if they have any suggestions or precautions for you. They know your physical condition best and they will be able to guide you.
You should see if your local YMCA or recreation center offers aqua fitness classes. Many pools have classes in water aerobics and water yoga that are just excellent for people with bad joints. There will be very little strain on your knee because you’re weightless underwater.
Good luck! I hope you find something that works for you.
Swimming is very low impact, good for bad knees and gives resistance. Also, look into seeing if your gym has an underwater aerobics class you can attend.
Biking is also equally good.
