What Kind Of Discharge From The Air Force Is Failing To Meet Fitness Standards?

Fat Loss 4 Idiots

So I have a troop who is probably going to get booted from active duty for failing his fit test repeatedly. He has gone to the required classes and attended the fitness program as instructed but he just can’t pass the test. If he gets the boot will it be an honorable discharge?

  • thomas:

he will get a general under honorable conditions.

Thank you Thomas for the correct answer. I love these people who are not in the air force answering an air force question. I also love the not much pt coming from a navy guy…funny, we used to say the same thing about you guys.
Anyway, without enough info, it is wrong to assume that just because someone cannot pass a pt test, that they are overweight or not trying. There are many factors. Is the test being given in extreme heat and humidity? Is the test being given after the guy just finished a long shift? Does the guy have an undiagnosed medical condition that may be hindering his performance…arthritis, asthma, FM, etc.?) Has he recently been on TB medication? There is just too much to list. However, as thomas put it, it would be an honorably discharge as long as everything else in the guys service pointed to that. BTW, there are plenty of overweight people who pass their pt tests. As his supervisor, it is your responsibility to investigate all avenues if you believe your troop is a good troop and trying his best.

It will NOT be a dishonorable or other than honorable. You have to do something BAD (crinimal) to get that. It would be an administrative discharge. Not 100% sure, but I think that is the same as honorable, just without the benefits that one would get after getting a regular honorable. GI bill, VA loans, etc.

  • Chantiss:

DEFINITELY NOT! It might be an other-than…. but I’m pretty sure it could be dishonorable. For the navy he could be charged with Defamation of government property (just because he gained a few pounds) and Article 92 Failure to obey a lawful order. If his command tells him to PT and he decides to eat instead, he’s disregarding that order. No disrespect, but I don’t see the Air Force pting much anyway. You guys are smart as hell and your marching is ALWAYS on point…. But you’re not the best at all when it comes to pting.

  • I know it wont be an honorable, which is kinda sad if hes really trying his best. It wont be bad i guess, but I think any discharge other than honorable looks bad on a resume. We have a girl who cant pass and they just lied on her test, unflagged her, promoted her, then put the flag back on.

  • alex:

If he is smart,he can try to make it an medical issue and get out on a medical discharge. If not and he is a good guy, they will give him an other than honorable.

  • JRock:

If the sole purpose for discharge is PT failure then it will Be Honorable. Read AFI 36-3208. Here is the excerpt:

“5.66.2. The service of airmen discharged for not meeting fitness standards will be characterized as honorable if the sole reason for separation is failure to meet fitness standards.”

the same thing has happened to me. I went to the classes worked my tail off in the gym. but in the end could not lose the weight. finaly my Commander recomended me for seperation to the ABW commander. she recomended a honorable discharge. she explained that since I was a good troop with no diciplin problems and not a shred of paperwork in my PIF she would not recomend less.
