When trying to lose weight, many people make the mistake of cutting back so drastically on their food intake that the body goes into starvation mode and tries to hold on to every bit of fat it can. Not exactly the result you would want!

Of course, intake of too many calories has a detrimental effect as well, so striking the right balance with the right types of foods is essential to taking off the pounds as quickly and healthily as possible. Here are some of my best tips for getting healthy:

First, try to limit sweets, sodas, candy and other empty calories. (Notice I said limit- a taste of something you have a craving for is important keeps you from feeling deprived and giving up.)

Second, stay away from the white stuff as much as possible– white sugar, white flour, white potatoes, etc. These are simple carbohydrates and spike your blood sugar unmercifully, causing extreme cravings.

Third, strive for five! This is one of USDA’s new nutritional guidelines, and it means to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables each and every day.

Fourth, cut down on your meat consumption, especially red meat. Try to make a couple of lunches and a couple of dinners each week completely meat free. Be creative, and you will be surprised that you don’t even miss the meat.

Fifth, drink lots of water! Not only will it keep you feeling full, it also replenishes every cell in your body and flushes away waste products.
