What Is The Best Exercise For Cats To Slim Them?
![]() |
One of my cats has a fat pooch that just dangles from his stomach. It’s kind of funny to watch it swing side to side as he runs. He is a very active cat, but never gets rid of his fat. Is there a good exercise method, other than playing with him, to skinny him up a bit?

They’re cats, they’re not much interested in exercise.
That pouch also comes around with age.
Just play with her some more and ask your vet for a prescription cat food.
Assuming your cat has a clean bill of health from the veterinarian, a feline exercise program can benefit any cat, regardless of weight condition. Try these cat exercises:
1. Use an interactive toy with feathers on the end. Move it like a bird to encourage your cat to leap and stretch.
2. Slither snakelike toys up and down stairs. These toys are also great for going up and over the tops of sofas.
3. Set up boxes, bags and soft-sided tunnels to create an obstacle course for your interactive exercise session. If you can’t find the soft-sided tunnels, make tunnels of your own by turning boxes upside down and cutting entrance and exit holes.
4. A small ball in a box works as a mini racquetball court.
5. Use your interactive toy around a tall, sturdy scratching post to encourage your cat to scratch. This causes a full stretch, which helps tone the muscles in the shoulders and back.
6. Invest in a multi-tiered cat tree so your cat can jump from one perch to the other during play. This exercise improves balance and coordination.
7. Plastic caps from milk jugs make great hockey pucks. Drop one on the kitchen floor to work on your cat’s speed and coordination.
8. Don’t forget to laugh. It wi’ll do wonders for you emotionally and physically. Your cat will pick up on your good mood, and everyone will have a good time.
Yes, cats do get flab from older age, but this will help slim her down. You can buy some cat vitamins to help her keep fit and most importantly be healthy! Have fun!
Once cats have gained weight there isn’t really much you can do as far as exercise. The only way to get him back to a healty weight is to change his diet. If you’re really concerned, and he needs to loose quite a bit, I’d suggest going to the vet and having them put him on a clinical diet cat food. Hill’s w/d is a good one. He may never loose his little pouch, though it will probably get smaller after he looses some weight.
the pouch is a very normal part of a cat. Not all cats have them, but for those who do it is natural and nothing you can exercise away.
I have seven cats, and two of them have very distinct pouches. They have never been overweight, and the vet says they are normal.
You want to get your kitty to lose a little weight, feed it a species appropriate diet. Check out http://www.catinfo.org and her section on obesity to help you understand why diet plays such a critical role in your cat’s health
I believe this belly is very normal. As most of my cats have it as well. I agree, it’s funny to watch them run and the fat sack goes back and forth, lol.
Anyway, what we do with our cats is use a red laser. You can buy them at your local retail store like Wal-mart. They are not harmful at all, just don’t point the laser in their eye. They love chasing and running after it. Our cats run back and forth from one end of the house to the other.
I’m not sure if this will help with the belly fat, however this will get your kitty some excercise and give you some great laughs at the same time.
Oh, the lasers are only like $4.00. Very cheap for hours of fun and laughs.
One thing to watch is your kitties breathing. One of my cats gets tired after like 10 min. and lays on the floor and breaths hard, we know he’s had enough. So be careful but have loads of fun.
Have fun…
Does he go outside? There’s nothing like a couple of hours moseying round the neighbourhood each day for keeping a cat trim.
Give her some healthy food and get her a laser pointer
