When most people talk about fat, they think that it is just below the surface of the skin. This is called subcutaneous fat. However, there is more than one type.

Then there is the infamous belly fat. This is a different type altogether. It is sometimes called toxic fat. Why? Because it contains inflammatory proteins. What do these do? They are responsible for the build up of plaque in your arteries. If your arteries become too blocked up you will eventually suffer a heart attack or stroke. It’s easy to see why it is important to get rid of it.

There is another sort of fat, which is sometimes called intra-muscular fat. The best way of describing this is to refer to a good steak. A good steak will have a marbling effect running through it. This is the intra-muscular fat.

There is another sort of type called visceral fat. This one you can’t see. It exists round your major organs like your heart, liver and kidneys. It is perfectly possible for a thin person to have a lot of this type. We should normally have about 1liter (or just over two pints) of this sort of that inside us. However, some people have been found to have up to six or seven times that amount.

Visceral fat can increase your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. People who are overweight or obese are more likely to have more of this visceral variety, but interestingly people who don’t consider themselves to be overweight, but don’t lead a particularly healthy lifestyle, are likely to have this bad type too.
