Does Smoking Affect Your Strength Or Just Aerobic Fitness?

Fat Loss 4 Idiots

Hi there, I am starting a fairly moderate fitness regime after giving up smoking with the start of the ban.
I was always good aerobically, even as a smoker, but my main focus has to be upon improving upper body strength. I was just wondering, if I were still a smoker (which I am not any more, I stress), would my ability to become stronger in the arms/checst suffer due to the habit, or not? It’s just that smokers only ever seem to lag when the exercise is aerobic.
Just wondering.
Thanks!

Smoking affects the ability for oxygen exchange. It kills cells within the lungs. Toxins build up in the lungs and throughout the body. The first and most obvious affects are in aerobics. When you have inadequate oxygen exchange you have no stamina. The blood is unable to circulate properly and thickens due to the toxins causing an increase in blood pressure. Aerobics is a good way to de-tox and increase oxygen supplies throughout the body. As for muscle strength, to build muscles properly you need optimal oxygen supplies.

Smoking leaves fatty deposits in the veins and arteries which can lead to blood clots and heart failure…
Excercise can help combat the damage done by smoking, but you have to quit too…
When you excercise you oxgenate the blood making it thinner and run through your body quicker to get to muscles that need it. This can help clear clots.
The worste thing you can do is smoke straight after excercise because your lungs are wide open and able to take the smoke deeper doing more damage!

  • Because the blood will carry more oxygen now you are no longer a smoker your strength as well as your fitness will improve – because your endurance will be better.
