How Effective Are Elliptical Trainers For Weight Loss?
![]() |
I really want to lose weight, and I have been exercising for about four years on a regular basis. I have gotten bored with step aerobics and walking, so my exercising has decreased to about 25-30 minutes per day. I bought an elliptical trainer. How effective are they for weight loss? How long should I exercise on it each day, and at what level (I am just starting).

Elliptical trainers are great because they don’t feel so difficult as treadmills. I do think, however, that the readouts for calories burned tend to be overly generous or high. It might tell you that you burned 450 calories in 40 minutes, but I don’t think that anyone really burns that many!
I would work out for 30-40 minutes (including cool down and warm up) – pick one of the preset programs that incorporate some “hills.” Don’t lean on the machine or rest your upper body while you work out – it’s a common mistake. Instead, try to pump your arms freestyle or pump with the skiing handblebars if they come on your machine.
A few years ago, I lost about 10 pounds in about 9 months (I wasn’t dieting at all), and I only used the elliptical at my gym. If you work out 5 times a week, I think it’s a very effective way to melt some fat and improve your cardio system!
If you want to lose weight you dont need a diet digital-tech.mypunbb.com
They are fantastic for weight loss! I have one too! Anyhoo- the biggest thing is that it is easy to get your heart rate too high on an elliptical machine to lose fat. You want your target heart rate to stay in the lower zone… if you get to high, it’s not bad by any means but you are working cardio (your heart), not burning fat. That is why simple walking works SO well for fat burning. You target heart rate is a simple calculation involving your age. Since I don’t know your age, I will just give you a basic calculation… All you have to do is take 220-(your age)= Max heart rate. Your target heart rate for fat burning is between 60-80% of your max. So, if you are 25 years old, your max rate would be 220-25= 195 and your target zone would be 117- 156 bpm (beats per minute). If you go above that zone, you go into cardio training which, again, is NOT bad but will not burn fat, it will burn calories and build cardio stamina. It is not bad to burn calories by any means but at that point, your body is not selective on just fat cells- you could be burning muscle cells too. So, 20-30 mins on that elliptical machine in your zone 3-4 times a week and you should start seeing results in just a few weeks! Good luck!
Any equipment is only as effective as the person using it. Walking happens to be one of the best exercises for weight loss, when combined with a proper diet.
The whole key is your metabolism. Twenty minutes to half an hour every day, preferably in the morning, increasing your heart rate to twenty percent above resting heart rate will increase your metabolism all day. This changes depending on your fitness condition. A good trainer can help you figure it out at first but it will need to be monitored as you progress to your fitness goal. Exercise is not all about losing weight, or in some cases ‘body building’- it is about feeling good and doing something good for yourself and your body.
i bought an elliptical two months ago. i do it about 35-40 minutes a day. it really helps to lose inches in your butt and thighs and even your stomach i love it but i started out at just 10-15 min first week. it really makes you sweat and you lose loads of calories
