Very little sugar and salt because they both cause swelling. More calcium, potassium and magnesium. Lots of vegetables, including about 2 servings of leafy green veggies per day, several servings of fruit, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean meat, poultry and fish. Most processed foods have too much salt and anything with MSG has extra sodium (Mono Sodium Glutamate) so those should be avoided. Vinegar and lemon juice are natural diuretics. Fresh or frozen fruits are good to substitute for sweets, they are naturally sweet. There are a lot of frozen fruits now and they are good mixed with some plain yogurt and a little honey.
My blood pressure was high a few weeks ago and now it’s dropped down a little too low and I have been eating mostly veggies and fruits and dairy instead of red meat (plus walking a lot helps too).

    Skim milk
Skim milk provides calcium and vitamin D, two nutrients that work as a team to help reduce blood pressure by about 3 to 10 percent. Although this doesn’t sound like much, it could add up to about 15 percent reduction in risk for cardiovascular disease.
Spinach, unsalted sunflower seeds, beans (black, white, navy, lima, pinto, kidney) Spinach, unsalted sunflower seeds and beans are all loaded with magnesium, a key ingredient for lowering and maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. These foods also provide lots of potassium, a primary nutrient in the fight against high blood pressure
    Baked white potato, banana, soybeans
These three foods provide ample potassium. Your blood levels of potassium and sodium are inextricably linked. When potassium is low, the body retains sodium (and too much sodium raises blood pressure). When potassium is high, the body gets rid of sodium. Eating potassium-rich foods is important for maintaining a healthy balance of both minerals and, by extension, for keeping blood pressure low.
Important note: Do not take potassium supplements unless specifically prescribed by your doctor. Too much potassium will upset the balance, and could have serious, even life-threatening consequences.
    Dark chocolate
Hooray for dark chocolate! Eating about 30 calories a day — that’s less than half an ounce of dark chocolate — was associated with a lowering of blood pressure without weight gain or other adverse effects, according to a study in the July 4, 2007, issue of JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association).

Salt intake is a major challenge. Most canned vegs have too much salt and need to be rinsed before using. Better to use fresh vegs.
Stay away from ham & processed meats – salami, bologni, pastrami.
Bakery goods may also have too much salt. Even those canned biscuits.
A few Good things to eat for high blood pressure:
    Tuna, Salmon, chicken white meat.
Coleslaw homemade w/ olive oil & sweet vinegar dressing.
cooked fresh vegs w/lemon juice & pepper to season.
    water. tea. coffee.
    spaghetti w/red sauce.

A blood pressure and heart healthy diet packed full of fresh fruits and vegetables is generally thought to help with blood pressure. Avoid excessive salt intake or cut salt out of your diet all together. Choose meals which are low in saturated fat, low in sodium and low in calories. Always choose low-fat or fat-free dairy products. Always eat your fruits and vegetables without butter or sauce. Choose rice, beans, cereals, pasta and other whole grain foods. When eating meat and fish, choose lean cuts and avoid eating the skin of turkey or chicken.

The type of diet to help lower blood pressure depends on what is causing the high blood pressure. If the high blood pressure is caused by kidney disease, then there is a special diet for that. If the high blood pressure is caused by complications of diabetes then a diabetic diet may be needed. If a person has essential hypertension, then the DASH diet may help.
Assuming that the person has essential hypertension (the most common form); increasing the amount of fruit, vegetables, and fiber helps lower blood pressure. Reducing the amount of fats, salt, meats, and total calories also helps. Chocolate, cookies, and biscuits have at least some fat in them; so they should be limited (not taken away completely, but eaten in small amounts). Jam and fruit juice may have added sugar, and are low in fiber; small amounts are fine, but fresh fruits are better. Using fresh or frozen vegetables without added sauces or butter is best. Avoiding prepared foods helps because of the salt content (canned foods, frozen meals, etc.)
I like using the DASH Diet Plan. It is easy to follow and well researched. There are plenty of choices, so it isn’t like eating a restricted diet, it is more like making different choices.

Sweets and caffeine are bad for high blood pressure. So are things like heavy red meats and un-lean meats.
Fibrous foods like grains and veggies are great at getting the BP down. Also replacing red meats with fish, or baked chicken. I think celery and garlic are supposed to be natural aides in reducing BP.

  • chasinga:

Definitely a low sodium diet. If it were me, I would ask her doctor for a diet sheet for this condition. Chocolate, tea and some colas have caffeine which will increase blood pressure.

  • Jackie Blue:

You want to lay off the salt and foods that contain a lot of salt. It will make your blood pressure rise. Try googling high blood pressure and read what is out there. You will find so much info.

  • towanda:

Low sodium diet . Easier said than done , with so many off the shelf foods containing it . At least don’t add salt , when you can avoid it . Every little helps .

  • RunaS:

The biggest thing you can do for high blood pressure is to cut the salt. All processed foods have salt.

  • rmbrruff:

    Low fat no salt.

  • jd:

Go online and find the DASH diet. It’s specifically for high blood pressure.
