Cardio For Fat Loss – Is it Really Necessary?

People are told that they need lots of cardio in order to lose fat. Well is this really true? I started wondering about this when a few months ago, despite going to the gym on a regular basis, I was still unable to break past my fat loss plateau.
Then one day at a friends house, I was watching gymnastics on TV. I wondered how these athletes, who rarely ever lift weights and never perform steady state cardio, were able to develop such lean and athletic physiques. I figured part of it had to do with the fact that they were training with their own bodyweight.
Yes, I know you’ve probably tried a workout using basic pushups, pullups, and bodyweight squats. However, most people stop seeing results with these movements because they are no longer able to challenge their bodies. Same exact thing happened to me and I know what mistake I made with my initial approach to bodyweight training.
In reality, your body needs to move up, down, front, back, and side to side. Here’s a great gymnastics move I picked up: perform a regular pushup, then move your body forward, place your head on the ground and lift your legs up so you end up doing a forward roll.
From observing gymnasts and dancers I’ve realized that the key to making my bodyweight exercises more difficult is to get my body moving in a variety of directions. Pushups, pullups, and bodyweight squats only trains your body to move up and down.
