How Can I Get Back Into Exercise And Get Into Shape?

Fat Loss 4 Idiots

I used to be in good shape when I did gymnastics and dance classes. In high school I played tennis. Now I’m in college, haven’t exercised at all, and am totally out of shape now! I don’t really like doing exercise, it was more fun when it was gymnastics and dance. But I’d like to start running, who knows, maybe the endorphins will make me like it. However, I can’t even run a mile now without having to walk and being totally out of breath. How can I ease back into exercise and increase my endurance? What other tips do you have to get into shape?

i would start by just doing lunges, and /or pushups, crunches etc.
whenever you have a few minutes and build some muscle.

I’m assuming you’re not very overweight (if so, you need to adjust your diet first…and no, I don’t mean stop eating anything but lettuce…just reduce the calories and eat better food). If not, then you really just need to persist at whatever you want to do. If you can’t hande running for too long, then walk but walk fast. You don’t have to do that silly fast walk thing…just imagine you’ve got to get to class and that class is a mile away. Normally, it’ll take you 20 minutes or so to walk that distance. Imagine you have to get there in 10.
Give yourself goals and keep at it. Give yourself a little reward if you make it (try not to use food) like going out somewhere when you normally wouldn’t or go see a movie during the week or whatever. Or have a weekly goal and treat yourself at the end of the week to something like that.
After a while, the reward won’t be necessary as you start to see improvements. If you keep track of your progress (this week I did the mile in 15 minutes, last week it was 17!) and see that progress, you’ll start feeling better about it. If you’re competitive enough, you can start to compete against yourself. When you get to a point where you feel you can handle it, switch to longer distances and then eventually to running.
If you can find an IM sport that you like, that’ll be even better.
Martial arts can be a great work out and with a beginning class you’ll start out easier. The regular class time will also help keep you legal (i.e. you’ll have the motivation to go somewhere if you have an appointment versus doing it on your own).
And, with all the above, if you have a friend who’s looking to get in shape as well, you each can act as motivators (you can cheer your friend on or you can compete).

  • well written thanks for the info !

I used to run and ride bikes and lift weights when I was in college. That was a long time ago,so I was really out of shape.I did water exercises .I hate to exercise but I got a list of water exercises from a physical therapist and every day for i.5 to 2 hours,I did my exercises in my pool.It was so easy.I was back in shape in five weeks.I look great now. There was no swimming involved.I worked out in 4 feet of water. Now that it’s cold outside,I joined l.a. fitness just to use the pool.Their pool is warm.Good luck to you.

i would start with doing regular exersizes, like walking, and situps and pushups, but after about a week, try jogging but PACE urself. it doesnt matter how far u r able to go. i cheerlead and i sure as heck cant go far in jogging or running….(im outta shape too kinda sad i kno) lol but pace urself and drink PLENTY of water!

  • Start with a walk/jog program . I use http://www.runnersworld.com it has a program called smart coach that designs a program from the beginner to the elite runner. lots of tips and just about anything you want to know about running

  • swarovski is right start with a walk/jog program. and as you progress increase the distance and speed

  • Callanetics tones and reshapes the body, and the effects are felt immediately. In fact, CardioCallanetics is another similar program that can help you to lose weight as well.
