How Long After Eating In The Evening Should You Wait To Exercise?
![]() |
From what I understand exercising on an empty stomach allows you to burn more of the stored fat in the body instead of what you’ve just eaten. I’ve heard as a result exercise in the morning can be effective. How about in the evenings though? How long after an evening meal should one wait so they simply aren’t just burning (or attempting) off the food they just ate?
Thanks.

Actually, exercising on a empty stomach is not good.
The theory behind this is that your blood sugar levels are low when you’re in a fasted state (after going all night without eating) which targets more fat burning.
The problem is that some studies have shown that fat burning doesn’t really start until you’re 20 minutes into your cardio workout. That means you’ve wasted 20 minutes without a good source of fuel to sustain you. That could lead to fatigue before your body even starts metabolizing fat, which might mean shorter (and/or crappier) workouts in which you burn less calories than if you’d eaten a small snack to keep you going you. Critics also say you may even burn muscle if you don’t have the necessary fuel for your workouts.
There are some other benefits to eating before your workout:
It can boost recovery and strength gains
It can help you sustain longer, more intense workouts
It can help you avoid low blood sugar, which can make you feel dizzy or nauseous
It can make your workouts more enjoyable (since you’re not thinking about eating the whole time)
Heres are some suggestions:
Banana (or other type of fruit)
Yogurt
Oatmeal
Energy bar or gel
Fruit smoothie
Sports drink
Sure, work out with food in your system. Just give it a few minutes to at least settle.
It’s very valuable to work out with food in your system, because it revs up your digestive system and your metabolism, so that your body continues to turn food into energy (not fat) when you’re not exercising. Working out when you’re empty is not a bad thing, but it keeps your body from operating at maximum performance, and consequently your metabolism plateaus. It may burn off some fat, but it’ll slow back down a little quicker, and it may burn some muscle too.
So go for it.
To tell the truth, I’m really not sure. I would think at least a couple of hours.
I would really try to exercise in the morning though. Not only are you burning off fat instead of the food you ate that day, but it also jump starts your metabolism so that you burn more fat throughout the day.
As an extra bonus, the endorphins give you a boost for at least the first half of the day. I find that when I exercise at night, I have a hard time falling asleep even a few hours after and don’t sleep as soundly as when I exercise in the morning.
Good luck!
You should wait two hours. Then eat a small protein-based meal to help repair the muscles and stop you from getting hunger pangs. Also drink water, or cordial if you’re doing more intense exercise.Oh and eating after exercise will not ruin your workout, it actually helps kick in your metabolism, so long as you dont go to bed not long after you eat beacause then your body will just store it as fat instead of burning it for fuel. Hope this helps.
Try eating carbs before a workout. About an hour or so. The carbs are what your body will need to break it down into energy. After a workout, eat protein to gain lean muscle. Working out in the mornings are great for all day energy. Evenings are fine too because your body will still burn fat while you’re body is resting.
around 40 minutes for a light meal
1 hour for a heavy meal.
Exercising in the morning can be better due to higher testosterone levels, and fewer stress hormones.

you shuold leave it at least half an hour just for your food to digest, but how long depends on what youve eaten, so eat fresh healthy foods it should be ok after half an hour. but ive heard it best if you dont eat after about 7 or 8 oclock in the evening. x
I do quiet a bit of exercising, I usualy wait about and hour and a half, that gives your stomach enough time to digest and relax before a rigorous workout.
well, usually on an empty stomach means about 8 hrs with nothing in your system. I do cardio in the morning, to burn more calories, and lift at night.
2 and a half Hrs after eating.
1 hour
Yea an hour or so. If you don’t you’ll end up getting sick real fast, I’ve done it plenty of times.
