How Many Minutes Of Exercise Should My ‘inside’ Dog Get Each Day?
![]() |
I live in an apartment and have a mixed breed Austrailian Sheperd dog (possibly mixed with cocker spaniel we don’t know we rescued her from a shelter). She looks very bored and kinda sad lately, but otherwise healthy. I think it’s due to lack of exercise. We play with her daily with but only for a few minutes during breaks in our busy schedules. Are daily outdoor walks a necessity or is inside exercise enough?

Dogs need time to run out their energy. I would at least suggest 1 hour a day for solid walking or running time if they are pent up in an apartment all day. My schedule is hectic as well but every night I take my Pit out of a good run it maybe only for an hour but she is worn out when we come home. I have now started looking forward to the time I spend with her and it provides exercise for me as well. Invest in some good toys, leave a radio or tv on while your gone, the noise should help sooth him/her.
why dont you pay someone to walk her, she must be very depressed staying in all day, you know how you would feel if it was you!! it would be like prison!!
Australian Shepherds are herding dogs. They’re very active and need lots of excercise. Not minutes, but hours. A large area where she could run unleashed would be ideal for her (like a ranch), but it’s not always easy to find something like that in a large city. If she gets along with other dogs, a dog park might be a good place to take her. Or if you’ve got the money, doggy day care.
“As working herding dogs, Aussies need exercise. A walk is not exercise. A good, vigorous game of frisbee is exercise, as is a run along side the bicycle. Aussies need exercise every single day without fail. A dog with too much energy and no outlet for it will get into trouble. If you are an active person who likes to walk, hike, jog and do other outdoor activities, then an Aussie might be great for you. If you’re a couch potato, don’t get an Aussie.”
I got this entry from the site on this link (about 1/2 way down the page) http://www.lizpalika.com/rightdog.html
Australian Shepperd dog should have at least 30 minutes a day in attention and 15 minutes an additional 15 minutes of play
see the dog whisperer show. all dogs need lots of walks and more walks. not just to go pee but to really walk. hire somebody if you are too busy or lazy. Your dog is being held in an un-natural prison like a gold fish. let it roam in the park a hour or two each day or whatever. get it out and let it be a dog.
