Overweight Police Officers And Physical Fitness Tests?
![]() |
I am taking an opinion poll for one of my classes and was wondering do you think that police officers should have to pass an annual physical fitness test to remain on the force? In my state there seems to be a lot of older overweight officers that I don’t think would be able to keep up with some people on foot. What are your thoughts?

Yes. My State requires you to pass something called the POPAT in order to get your certification. It is strenuous but reasonable. If I had it my way we would have to pass it every year but I’m not in charge. I would at least like to see some sort of monetary incentive like tying your fitness level to your raise.
I’m in good shape and run at least one marathon a year. I don’t expect my fellow Officers to stay in that good of shape but I would like for there to be some sort of incentive to stay in shape.
Here is a handout that describes the POPAT:http://www.jus.state.nc.us/NCJA/instruct…

I agree with the cop statement unless the cops aren’t just street cops, some of them work in traffic, arson, they’re detectives, etc. basically not having to chase after people.
Paramedics don’t really need to be fast, that’s why they drive ambulances with big lights and sirens so people can move out of the way, the way of the paramedic isn’t to rush into a scene, they’re trained to be calm, calculating and paying attention to detail.
All paramedics really need to do on a physical level is be able to lift a patient up and down a set of stairs (with another person), in most real life scenarios they have help from fire fighters as fire fighters are there to help and are usually the first of the responders on scene.
P.S. Just because somebody looks like they’re overweight that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re out of shape.4
I agree. In the area where I live, not only police officers that are overweight, but the paramedics are somewhat obese too. I was like, man how can you be a paramedic when you’re overweight? You gotta move and do everything fast to save people’s lives. On that note, I agree that an annual physical fitness test should be reinforced!
I definitely think police officers need to pass an annual fitness test. They need to be in a good shape, that is essential for their job. They never know what situations they get into while catching bad guys. It they can not pass, too bad, then I would transfer them to desk duty. They should not be on streets, or respond to 911 calls if they are out of shape.
I think that they should have to.
They must be of a certain fitness to get into the poloce force, but then when thy are in it doesn’t seem to matter :S
If they aren’t at the right fitness level, then they won’t be able to do their job.
