What Percentage Of Ones Daily Diet Should Be Dedicated To Protein?

Fat Loss 4 Idiots

I eat very healthily; however, I worry that I am not getting enough protein for the amount I workout (4-6 days a week, 1-2.5 hours a day). Right now, protein makes up between 15-20% of my diet. Is this sufficient? Please keep in mind that I don’t believe in any of that no carbohydrate, protein only diet crap. Right now I eat lots of fruits and veggies, whole grains, nuts, lean meats, tofu and other soy products.

15-20% of protein should be quite sufficient for your diet. Generally, athletes in training (elite athletes) will take in a bit more, 30%ish, but if you are not trying to build up extra muscle, you shouldn’t need more than 20%. It sounds like you are on the right track. There are plenty of websites that can help plan meals around your calorie intake, I use http://www.thedailyplate.com, it breaks down the percentage of what i am eating (carbs, protein, fat, etc.) or http://www.mypyramid.gov. You may also want to visit http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/diabetes-diet/DA00027. There is a governmental website for diabetes that is a GREAT resource, but unfortunately I can’t remember it. My nutrition prof. actually suggested that food pyramid to the one we’re all used to…

gizmo: Not to sure about protein intake and how much is too much etc. But, your intake of food looks perfect to me. My intake is similar. What I do is stay away from combinations of foods. For example, If I have potatoes, I don’t have meat, and visa versa. I eat all green vegi’s, even the ones I don’t like. I flavor them up with garlic. And I stay away from salt. So far, I healthy. never counted calories, etc. never went on a ‘strict diet’. Just tried to eat sensibly.

Protein 50 grams (about 10% of 2000 calories) is recommended for diabetics so if you’re healthy 20% is right on target.
You’re doing a good job. Keep up the good work.

    40%. Keep a 40/40/20 ratio. 40% carbs / 40% protein / 20% fat.
