The best list of foods to lose fat will depend on whether you like to exercise. If you plan to exercise consistently or are already sticking to an exercise routine, go for a very low fat diet. The best foods will be high in protein and low in fat, such as boneless, skinless chicken breasts, canned tuna (without the mayo), salads with low fat dressing and lots of veggies, low and non-fat yogurt, etc. When you are hungry, grab some baby carrots or fresh or dried fruits. Try to eat just enough rice, potatoes, and other carbohydrates to give you energy, but no more than that. Skip the butters and oils by poaching, grilling, and steaming meats and vegetables. Avoid cheeses and fried foods. Make sure everything that goes in your mouth is packed with nutritional value – avoid the processed and refined foods.
If you know you will not exercise much, you could do the ultra low carbohydrate diets, like Atkins. This means any and all proteins and fats, and basically no carbohydrates. People have been known to lose a lot of weight on this diet where other diets have failed. The problem (for me, anyway) is that within about 4 days, you will have lost all of the glycogen stores in your muscles if you exercise, and you will basically be out of the endurance-type of energy. Before the diet, I could run for miles, but on day 4 of the diet, I could not run further than a block. Also, you might really notice an inability to think and concentrate because the brain uses a lot of carbohydrates for energy (this was a big problem for me).
Rule of thumb – If it is green it is good. But you need to eat it plain – No butter, creams, sauces, etc.
These are the best foods. Keep in mind that you still need to be mindful of the QUANTITY, regardless of what you eat.

Many patients ask me how they can slim down. I am against prescription pills because I prescribed them many years ago, and some of my patients became very ill.
