How Do You Exercise An Overweight Dog That Has A Severe Limp And Can Hardly Walk?

Fat Loss 4 Idiots

We took our dog to a vet due to a slight limp in his front left leg. The vet recommended surgery to cut the ligament and indicated that it would provide immediate relief. Six weeks and $1,600 later, the poor dog can hardly put any weight on the leg. The vet said he should lose weight, but how can he lose weight when he can’t exercise? Unfortunately, we live in the Midwest (cold) so we can’t take him to swim. I feel so bad for him – he just lays around.

I would be worried that six weeks later after surgery that the dog still can’t put weight on his leg. There is something definitely wrong with that. It sound like your dog either had a cruciate ligament tear repaired or a luxated patella repaired. I definitely would recommend getting a second opinion from a board certified orthopedic surgeon this time and have his leg reevaluated. Him not being able to walk on that leg probably has nothing to do with his weight

good question not sure about the exercise part but try feeding your dog proplan dog food it is great and keeps my pets at the right weight even without exercise. Try one cup at night and one cup in the morning

I had a similar problem with my dog. You need to find a high fiber, high protein dog food and only feed him twice a day. For my dog(who used to weigh 156 pounds) I feed him ONE cup of food in the morning and ONE cup at night. He is now down to about 115 pounds.
P.S. I think the fiber content of my dog’s food is around 18% (minimum) and the protein is 25%(minimum)
    Hope this helped.

  • I once owned a jack russell terrier who like to chase cars and finally caught one… with two broken hips sockets I had to find a way to exercise him and let him do his business. You can take a long beach towel put under his belly and hold up the two sides to help him walk easier, it takes the pressure off his legs. But remember that all animals have a way of taking care of themselves, usually we people are just getting in the way of nature when we try to force a hurt animal to do what they can’t or won’t, give it time and you can always walk in front of him with a treat to get him moving!
