Confused About Fat Loss, Muscel Gain And Cardio?

If there are any fitness gurus out there who could help me out with this, I’m be forever thankful :-)
I was told that cardio is the most (and possibly the only) effective way to lose fat. Obviously weight lifting is the way to gain and tone muscels. I got that part.
What I don’t understand is the whole, “burning fat” vs. “burning muscel” thing.
Should I lift weights first and then do cardio, or does this cause my body to burn muscel instead of fat?
Or should I do cardio first and then lift weights, or does this inhibit my body from gaining muscel?
Bottom line really is, how do I get my body to burn fat and not muscel.
Thanks again for any help.

    Cardio before weights. That why it’s be more effective and safe because you’re muscles will be warmer and that means you risk less pulling them or something.
    Cardio, like running or swimming, means your body requires more glucose. (That’s simple sugar.) Once the glucose in your blood levels run low your pancreas sends horomone glucagon to your liver, where more glucose that has been stored is released. Glucose (in the form of glycogen) is stored both in muscles and in fat. But don’t worry – you won’t be losing muscles (size wise) by cardio. Think about it, if you’re running you’re stretching and toning those hamstrings and all.

    Well i kind of have the opposite opinion of the previous posts. Weight lifing should be done first.. Doing your strength exercises first ensures that you have the most energy and are able to execute all your lifts with perfect form and maximum effort. The last thing you want to do is wear yourself out on the treadmill, then not be able to lift heavy enough or long enough to produce any real muscle development. If you are going to do cardio on the same day you should keep it under 30 mins so that your body does not enter a catablolic state and go after your precious muscle for fuel… Save longer cardio sessions for alternate days from your weight training. On the weight training days go for higher intensity circuit training and get your longer steady state cardio on specific “Cardio” days… ps.. I am a personal trainer with the National Strength and Conditioning Association.. so i guess i have some credentials.. good luck to ya

    Ok. You can’t “burn muscle” with exersice. The cardio burns the fat. The heavy weight training builds muscle tone. It only feels like a burn. And if its burning, that means its working. Cardio is a fat burner, and heavy weights is a muscle builder. You can lose muscle w/ lack of exersice but not burn it off with it. The burny feeling is only a build up of lactic acids when you work out.
    IN SHORT
    Cardio and workout= burned fat + bigger stronger guns.
    Exersice good, not bad for muscles.
    No exersice can burn off muscles.
    Unless you’re playing with fire.
    But in order of getting in shape –Cardio then heavy weights.
    Baby steps man. don’t just start using 100 lbs bells
