    I practice “fling-pu” every night.
I go to the stalls with my pitchfork and…well, you get it. (I had the folks at my office believing this was a new aerobic excercise. Giggle)
I bike. I try to do a couple of miles a night. It’s not a lot but I’m an old(er) fart and have lots of back issues.

  • Yes! I swim in addition too like you. Biking, running, and even walking can get you really fit if you do it regularly enough.

  • Strive for Perfection:

I do sit ups occasionally, and run, usually the same days I do sit ups. I only ever do that a few times a week because I just don’t have time often. I skate almost every week. I swim. I jump on a trampoline( really good leg exercise if you do it for any length of time), and do wall sits every so often.

Running is always good. I’ve heard yoga is too.
As for me, I play tennis (LOVE IT!), and OCCASIONALLY run. I ride my bike A LOT too.
They make special books for yoga and horses though.
I have a good book called “Yoga for Equestrians”, though I have never really looked at it for longer than 10 minutes.

I have an elliptical machine (cross-trainer) that I jog on 30 minutes a day. I can’t actually go jogging outside due to arthritis in the knees, I’m not able to do impact exercising.
So I ride 3 days a week and use the elliptical 4-6 days a week.
My daughter started using the elliptical and is working on burning calories to slim down – its more fun for her then running outside. She also rides 4+ days a week, plays sports, etc.

Most of the exercises you will come across will be stretches for the legs and back. These are extremely important and useful to the rider and should not be overlooked, but they will not help develop muscular strength and stamina. Of particular importance to the rider are exercises strengthening the inner leg muscles, esp. the inner thighs, and the back muscles. Your family doctor or a trainer at any fitness center should be able to supply you with a set of back strengthening exercises. Many fitness centers also have exercise equipment specifically designed to work the inner leg muscles. Anything that replicates the sort of leg squeezing action used in riding will help strengthen legs for mounted exercise. I have even used to practice posting on my family’s fuel oil tank to try and strengthen and tone up my legs.

i also play soccer in the fall, and that’s it. my neighbors have a pool, and i love to swim in it whenever get the chance!

  • Kicking Bear:

Abdominal muscles are very important in riding so I make sure I work out my stomach. I swim also, but I like to use my fins with a kick board sometimes because it really helps work your calves and ankles. Biking is also good for the legs and cardiovascular system – and it’s very low impact.
Make sure you spend a lot of time stretching, it doesn’t just help with flexibility, it makes the muscles look better also.

I have a gym membership and used to go at 6am every morning but the novelty wore off after a couple of months and with breeding season, sales and everything else I have to do, I just quit going. Figured I get enough exercise anyway.
I did enjoy going though and it was more fun than I expected so maybe consider a membership. Gets you out of the house for a while and you meet new people. I went to a women’s only gym which was much more comfortable and not so much like a meat market.

I stretch, swim & walk briskly.

I bike like crazy!!!!!!!! As well as ride! You could bike, jog or walk. I also heard that yoga and pilates is good!

  • jumpanox:

I went without getting on my horses for 6 weeks after a fractured skull/broken collar bone/broken arm incident with my crazy boy.
My trainer gave me some ideas to help keep in shape so I wouldn’t miss any of the show season.
Usually I run and ride my bike but that was impossible so what I did was sit on a chair with your feet on the floor and use a beach ball betweens your knees and do reps of 30 squeezing the ball as if you’re gripping your horse. Also, stand on the edge of a stair with just the front of your feet on it and let your heels sink down as far as you can and hold for 10 secs, then move up to your tiptoes and stand for 10 secs…that one gets tiring but boy does it work out your calves.
