How Much Does Smoking Affect Your Fitness If You Are Young?

By Diet | Dec 19, 2009

I recently did the mile and a half run for the army in under 9 minutes and feel fit. The trainer of the footie team I play for has been giving the few of us who smoke a hard time about it and says we’d be fitter if we didn’t smoke but I don’t think it makes too much difference if you keep yourself fit enough in other ways.

Continue and you are pretty much doomed. Some level of both heart and lung disease is inevitable and slowly and inexorably your fitness and function will suffer.

I don’t like to try and frighten anyone and to be honest if you are in the army and play sports you must be very fit . However from my group of about 10 friends I had from early teens , only one of us smoked . He also played football and was reasonably fit . Unfortunately when he was 39 he suddenly dropped dead at work one day (heart attack) , leaving a wife and two young children distraught . That was around 20 years ago and he has missed out on his children growing up and now starting their own families . If it is possible you should try and stop , just think of what you can do with the extra money Good Luck , especially if you are still in the army and maybe having to go to dangerous places to keep peace for the rest of us

You will slowly lose your fitness, no matter how much you train, you’ll get yellow teeth, you’ll have horrible breath, you stand a good risk of catching lung cancer, can worsen asthma, you can become infertile, you can lose your eyesight gradually, causes high blood pressure, and you also affect other people.

You might not notice the difference for quite a while, because the decrease in your fitness is a slow process… But it cuts down on the useable portion of your lungs, which will make you less fit than those who don’t smoke.
Completing your run in under 9 minutes is impressive – but depending on how long you have been smoking, it might have been possible for you to beat that time previously.
Believe it or not, we don’t actually use 100% of our lungs when we breathe. I don’t remember the actual percentage… but our bodies are designed to be able to lose part of our lungs without causing us any trouble. So while the chemicals in your lungs eat away at the portion you don’t use, you won’t notice a difference.
However, eventually your lungs will start to shrivel up and slowly become more and more uselss to you – even if you never get cancer or any of the other horrible side effects people go on about these days, you will eventually lose the lung capacity you currently have and not be able to run or play football. I’ve met people in their 40s who can barely manage to take the dog for a walk without getting winded.
If you can’t kick the habit, but want to get rid of the side effects, here’s an alternative for you: http://greensmoke.com/4045.html
It’s an electronic cigarette. All the nicotine, none of the horrible chemicals. So there’s no danger to your health or to anyone around you who might currently be breathing in the second hand smoke.
Plus, it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than regular cigarettes – can save you up to 75% in the long run.
