Depends on the breed of dog. A large breed dog, say a Golden Retriever should not be walked that often because if grows up fast and the bones are developing fast. The breed should be walked in small durations on an every other day basis. A smaller dog may be walked more earlier because its growth does not mature as rapid as the larger breeds.
A dog shouldnt really be taken on long walks (30mins+) untill its at least 6months old.
Exercise for a puppy would be best in the backyard with a ball or frizzbee

A good rule of thumb is 5 minutes for each month of age – a 3 month old pup can have 2 x 15 minutes walk each day, 4 months 20 minutes, 6 months 30 minutes/. The trick is to build up the dog’s exercise gradually so her muscles have time to develop along with bones & joints. It’s more important to restrict exercise with bigger breedes but no young pup should be taken on cross country hikes without having had chance to strengthen muscles & ligaments.

Don’t over exercise large breed puppies, it causes their soft joints and bones to deform. Don’t feed large breed puppies puppy food, it makes them grow too fast for their frame and they end up with bad joints as well (especially hips). A small walk for a younger puppy, and a medium walk for a 6+ month old, medium = slow steady 15 minute walk.

Depends on just how old she is. If you have a yard start teaching her to walk on a leash, dogs don’t like to be alone, so if you put her in the back yard she will most likely end up at the door. By walking her you “kill 2 birds with one stone”. you are training, exercising and keeping her company.

  • Well depends on breed like a shih tzu doesn’t need to be walk just played with alot or a short walk both will keep it in shape and out of mischief. But if a border collie, then needs as much exercise as possible.
