I Just Joined Anytime Fitness, But I Feel Embarrassed To Exercise In Front Of Other People ?

I am going to go, at least 3 times a week, even if I don’t feel comfortable. But I am planning on going after work at like 10pm, when a lot of people wont be there. I’m overweight so I feel like all the people who are in shape are watching me and judging me.

I’ve been going to gyms for 12 years now, and I’ll tell you a secret: No one is watching you. Nearly every person at the gym thinks everyone is looking at him/her. So, everyone spends a lot of time looking at everyone else to see whether anyone is looking at them. It’s ridiculous. Something about gyms makes otherwise sensible people start to think like 13-year-olds at a dance.
Yes, people will see you. They’ll look at you for a few seconds, then they’ll look at someone or something else in the room. Just as you will look at other people. Nothing bad is going to happen if someone looks at you and even if they have some childish, mean little thought. Will it keep you from getting the benefits of your workout? Will it keep you from getting closer to where you’re trying to go? Of course not.
The choice you have is to A.) spend your time at the gym fretting about who might be looking at you and what he/she might be thinking or B.) focus completely on doing the best, hardest workout you can do that day. Any energy wasted on choice A subtracts from the quality of your workout.
Finally, get some comfortable workout clothes that you like, including two good sports bras. They don’t need to be expensive. The store brands at City Sports, Target and Galyans/Dick’s are good. DO NOT put your workout clothes in the dryer, ever. It’s terrible for the synthetic fabrics and Spandex – causing them to shrink and to come apart prematurely. Just wash them and hang them up. Buy your workout clothes in the size you wear NOW, not the size you think you’re going to be later. Don’t just look at yourself in the mirror when you try the clothes on. Jump, kick, bend and turn in them – whatever motions your workout consists of. If they start to ride up or bind, or if they’re too restrictive, put them back and try something else. Exercising in uncomfortable, unflattering clothes that you’re constantly tugging at will make you self-conscious and miserable.
Good luck. Just go to the gym and do your workouts. Everything will be fine.
Unfortunately, you’re just going to have to get over that. First of all, who cares what anyone thinks…you’re doing something for yourself that nobody should be able to take away from you. Good for you! Second, it’s only natural for people to notice other people. You will likely do it too. Just get in there and get it done…plain and simple. If you’re too worried about what everyone else thinks, you’re not going to reach your goals. Good luck, and work hard!
