The Monk Diet

When I lived as a Buddhist monk in the backwater jungles of Thailand, I learned many important lessons that have made my life easier. One of them is how to handle food. The rules of a Theravada monk include eating only once a day, and it is in the morning. Generally, we would go to the surrounding villages at sundown and utter our bowls to farmers, who could fill them with the same food they ate – mostly glutinous rice, bananas, vegetables and occasionallydyeing protein, perhaps chicken, grasshoppers, or dried fish. And occasionally a treat of some fruit juice or mango to accompany gallons of water I drank in the hot climate.
We could then go and sit in the meditation hall and eat our meals in silence, meditating on how we eat, not for pleasure, not health, not strength, but just for fuel so we can continue our efforts toward enlightenment. The first two weeks were difficult, but Ihabit, and the amazing thing is that my meditation improved dramatically from what it was stateside when I want to eat every day, and nothing in sight!
I went in at about 220 pounds and in no time had fallen to 180, about right for my six foot two frame. I have never felt better. In fact, experience has stuck with me all these years, and 65 years, now I weigh about 185. There is something so simple. No money or programs involved, only meditation, which improves healthdramatically, especially the immune system – and mind – to reduce fear and anxiety. And meditation is something he wants curbs, all desires, so you can live a more healthy, peaceful life harmful few indulgences, and less karma.
