Lately, I have seen a lot on the news dealing with obesity and all these other obesity related diseases… As far as I know, doctors usually do tell patients they need to exercise. But do they emphasize exercise or just give the patient medicine or both?

Doctors want to see their patients HEALTHY. and what’s healthy for some, isn’t necessarily good for others. For example someone could be overweight and develop diabetes, or hypertension as a result of the obesity. For these individuals, just “diet and exercise” will not 100% fix the problem, depending on their conditions. And sometimes, the obesity is a result of something physiologically occuring within the body, like a problem with the thyroid gland, or something hormonal. Not to say that everyone who is obese cannot benefit from diet and exercise, but for some it’s part of the solution not the absolute answer. They key to seeing results, and getting the RIGHT help is being open and honest with your Dr. and yourself about what’s really going on. Only then when you expose the source, can the Dr. & you work together to treat and fix it.
I hope this helps! Best of Luck!
Doctors are hopefully, a person’s last resort. We all know we need to lose weight if we are heavy. The doctor will ask your health habits, he can’t transform you into an exercising, thin person. He gives you medication to help you make it through everyday. He wants to help you any way he can.
For example, if I have high blood pressure many times losing weight will help greatly. Doctors may even give you a diet to follow. We are adults and we can surely ask for help. He gives us medication as our last resort so we don’t die of a heart attack or a stroke.
Many people insult doctors and say they slam the meds, but if you didn’t need any help than you wouldn’t bother going to the doctor.
For example, if a person is mentally ill all the psychotherapy and exercise in the world may not help. The doctor gives you medication so you can function in life.
I would say that the doctor normally gives medication, it’s up to you to do the diet, exercise discipline.
No medicine will make up for not exercising or eating unhealthy. Inless your doctor is unbelievably bad and gives you medicine to help you lose weight (no medicine helps you lose weight inless it is like lypo-suction which is super bad for you!) they will usually tell you to exercise and eat healthy. But it is hard for them to persuade every one of their patients to do that, and really it is your choice to be healthy and live a great life, or be unhealthy and die early from a heart attack.
There just trying to help.
If a doctor tells you to exercise instead of taking medicine, you would be healthier & you might not need to go back to him for a while so his business would suffer. That’s why it’s easier to prescribe medicine. That’s just my opinion. I think the healthcare industry, the insurance companies & the medicine companies have a thing going on that they are working together to keep themselves in business. Don’t ya think?
I completely agree with you. That way they than can make more money from the drug companies. Exercise is one of the laziest things that we all do, It’s easy to sit on our butts and watch Oprah, Rachel Ray etc. Most health problems would be allot better if we would do more activities.
its easier to perscribe something because it keeps $$$ coming into the medical field.
well some doctors do it for the money
but some doctors do it because it’s last resort for patients.
