How Does Exercise Work On Weight Loss? What’s The Mechanism?
![]() |
According to Law of Conservation of Matter, there is no detectable increase or decrease in the quantity of matter, no mass is changed during an ordinary chemical change. So my question is:
How does exercise work on weight loss? Where does all the mass go during exercise? As we all know, if we use our calories, our weight decreases. But there is inconsistency between the law and weight loss. Anyone can explain this mechanism? Thanks in advance.

Weight is lost through breathing – I’m not kidding. Fat is a hydrocarbon made of Hydrogen and Carbon. Hydrogen gets used to create water and the carbon gets exhaled as CO2.
depends. When you do standard exercises such as sit-ups, push-ups, etc, your not losing any fat but you are toning your body. Cardio though, like running, allows you to actually “burn” body fat away through sweat. Hope this helps.
so r u trying to lose wt? If so, eat right, smaller portions, and walk 3 miles an hour for one hour 3 to 5 times a week right before dinner. If you are just trying to overthink this, get a girlfriend and a hobby.
the metabolic process uses food (calories) for energy. when the body doesn’t have calories to use anymore, ie. you’re eating less, then it turns to fat reserves to “burn” for energy.
think of it like gasoline in a car, except unlike gas, fat burns clean with no exhaust.
The bottom line of weight loss is calories in and calories out. Weight loss occurs when we increase our metabolism. Increased heart rate through exercise increases metabolism. Its a slow process, that’s why there is no detectable changes in mass during exercise. Sure would be exciting if we could actually see the weight “disappear!”
just one aspect of a complex mechanism. something like internal cannibalism, the body cannibalizes its own mass if it is starved. that process is well known. i just can’t remember the exact terminology. but you can see it everytime on survivor.
big healthy men and women losing loads of weight.
i think it still follows the laws of physics. the body itself breaks down bodymass. maybe biophysicists can give you a more technical answer. i’d like to see it too.
