What Do You Think Of My Exercise Program?
![]() |
When I was younger I was a powerlifter but that would tear my joints apart now, among other things….I am 49; I walk a mile a day and exercise moderately three times a week with the weight machines. It’s all about trying to be healthy now. It used to be about being powerful and all.
If you were my age, would you take the same approach? Do you think what I’m doing is good?

I think I wouldn’t limit myself to just walking one mile a day, but focus on how much time I walked. My Dad always emphasized at least half an hour and we could walk 2 miles in half an hour. All the “experts” say we should get at least 30 minutes of exercise if not 45+ minutes a day too. Have you tried varying your exercise with different things other than walking? That way you use different muscles and that can help you stay healthy. Bike riding, swimming, etc… Good health to you!
I do believe you are on the right track. The key thing that you did mention was “healthy”. I think one of the key things you may want to also think about is a minimum of 30 mins of exercise and I am unsure if you are getting it with the mile. To get the full 30 mins you could do the mile and add some weightlifting after walking your mile. You may want to integrate hills, steps, etc to decrease that feeling of doing the same thing all the time. You may want to think about stretching before and after your walking. I have found this to be helpful as a older athlete myself. 5 days a week is a good maintenance of health according to the updated exercise guidelines. One other thing I was thinking of was eating “healthy” as well to maintain your fitness.
