Apart from the original “sit up” & ” leg raises” does anyone know of a abdominal exercise that really works?

There is no most effective abominal exercise — it is a very subjective thing. I like hanging leg raises but I know of many people who get a lot out of regular crunches. And, I know quite a few others who have developed great abs from merely training the entire body with no direct ab training. If you are asking for yourself, I would say try a variety of movements (give each a chance for a while) and see what feels best to you. There are tons of ways of training the mid-section. Just don’t ignore the obliques, as they are a bigger part of the trunk (and more important for stabilization of the back and core).
