What Would Be Considered Moderate Exercise For My Dog?

I have recently moved to Los Angeles from a pretty much Rural Pennsylvania mining town. My question is I have a 11 month old Redbone Coonhound who is living in an apartment in the middle of North Hollywood. I know these dogs need at least some daily moderate exercise. Can someone give me some examples of what would be considered moderate?

I have two coonhounds, a black and tan and a walker and a good option for me are dog parks. I’m sure there are parks in the city, but be careful, hounds are very suseptable to other dogs energies, so if your pup gets agressive, forget going back. Not an ideal situation, but you’re a city boy now!
As you know, hounds are all about the scent, so going for walks is the best option. Long walks….like an hour or so, preferably with grass and trees around them.
We bring our little guy (18 mo) to doggie day care twice a week. He loves it! Comes home filthy and exhausted, which is what he needs.
Also, try doing some mental work with him inside. Hide treats in places he’ll find…work on learning a new trick, get him into agility training. Mental stimulation is more tiring for my guys than a romp outside.
Whatever you chose, make sure he’s tired. My trainer said, “when their tongues hang out the side of their mouth, you’ve worked ‘em enough.”
Walk the dog 1 mile, without stopping, at least four times a week. See the article below. It’s about a program ala Dog Whisperer, for retraining recalcitrant dogs, but it has specific recommendations about dog walking for different dog sizes.
If he’s friendly towards other pets, there’s probably a dog park somewhere around you can take him to at least three times a week (more is better) to burn off some of that energy.
Does he do fetch? Does he like laser lights? I say the laser light because my dog would chase that thing all day if the batteries wouldnt run out! Good for rainy days
Every dog should receive at least 30 minutes of exercise on a daily basis. It will help to keep them trim and to burn off extra energy to make a more calm, submissive dog. If you want to do more than 30 minutes then go for it. Dogs LOVE to be active and your dog will tell you he’s had enough. =)
I’d say a 30-60 minute brisk walk once a day would be great. However, you can also take your dog to the park (or a dog park) and throw a ball for a while, if your dog likes to chase a ball. It’s also a good opportunity for mental stimulation, too.
Going to the dog park is a good idea. If you have to keep him on his leash in the meantime, make sure to take him for at least one long (1/2 hour) walk a day.
ALL dogs need daily exercise, preferably at least an hour. More if they have to stay on lead. Young dogs like yours usually need more.
I can’t really say. I would think that the amount of exercise that would be considered moderate exercise would be different for every breed, and even every individual dog.
I don’t know much about Coonhounds, except that they have always been my moms favorite breed, but I would think with them being a hunting/working type breed, they would need a good amount of daily exercise. My husband and I own a 3 year old male American Pit Bull Terrier named Brooklyn. He’s not a big dog, he’s a medium breed and only weighs around 50 pounds, but because he’s a terrier/working type breed he needs plenty of daily exercise. Since owning Brooklyn we have lived in a few different places. We lived in a small house, a duplex, we rented a room for a while and now we finally have a nice home.. lol! But, by far the worst was when we were renting a room. Brooklyn wasn’t allowed to run around the house like he always has. The only time he could leave the room was if we were taking him outside and he had to be on a leash in the house. We weren’t there long, but we didn’t have a choice at the time so we just had to make the best of it. We have always taken Brooklyn for 2-3 45-60 minute walks a day, but we took him out even more then. He was outside enough and got enough exercise that it wasn’t a problem for him to be in the room the rest of the time. And as I said before, that didn’t last long, only a couple months, so we just made it work. Anyway, my point is that if we can make things work, having an adult APBT while renting a room, I’m sure you will be able to find a nice balance for you and your dog in your new place.
Now, I don’t really think our 2-3 45-60 minute walks would be considered moderate exercise. I’m sure you don’t need to walk your dog that much, but I would suggest at least 2 walks a day, one in the morning and one at night. And I’d also suggest those walks be a nice length, maybe 30 minutes or so. Again, I don’t know much about your breed, but I do know that our terrier would be just fine with 2 30 minute walks a day, so I would think that would be okay for your dog as well.
I’m really sorry I couldn’t be of more help, but I hope you can work things out. I wish you and your dog the best of luck in your new place! : )
