How Do I Get Started In Swimming For Fitness? Creating A Work-out Plan?

I’m not an excellent swimmer by any means but I can keep myself afloat and moving. With it being 115 degrees here half the summer I think I might like to get into swimming 2 or 3 times per week. Where do I start? What kind of goals should I set? Thank you.

i’m a lifeguard, and sometimes guard during swim practice and meets. during practice i’ve looked at the agenda the coach has. he has them swim a decent amount, something i could never do, but i noticed something about it. start out with a warm up, then push yourself more, then cool down, then push yourself more, etc.
here’s what i swim, and i’m also just a beginning lap swimmer.
100 freestyle
200 flutter kick (with kickboard, 100 on front, 100 on back)
200 backstroke
100 freestyle
50 breaststroke
50 arms (using a peanut that you place between your legs to immobilize them, so you just use your arms, doing freestyle)
50 sidestroke
