My son was/is a HUGE responder to the gluten free/casein free diet. The diet changes lives for alot of people. I can’t tell you how much my son changed after the diet. Please feel free to email me and I will be glad to help. To “recover” means that the child becomes indistinguishable from his peers and no longer meets the criteria for autism. However, any gains, large or small can change your child’s future. I highly suggest you start the diet and strictly adhere to it for an extended period of time so you will know how it is working. An extremely high percentage of kids respond to this diet. Here are a few things that happened after the diet:
We couldn’t potty train our kid to save our lives. Two days after starting the diet, he potty trained himself. That same week, instead of carrying the toys around like he always did, he actually sat and played with me. Within weeks, the noises he used to make were cut by over 50%. His tantrums were fading away (we previously couldn’t leave the house without one). He stopped vomitting for no reason when we also took artificial dyes out of his diet. We eventually had to treat yeast, bacteria, vitamin deficiencies, etc. because I found out my son’s body was a wreck. They say your “gut” is your second brain.
These kids are physically ill. Whether it be food intolerances, yeast overgrowth, bacteria, constipation/diarrhea, exzema, asthma, viruses, metals (some have all) we need to try and heal their bodies to heal their mind. I never truly knew my son until we started biomedical intervention this year. He is SO happy now and his speech and comprehension are growing daily. He is flyiing through his ABA programs and continues to amaze us. I would love to help others on their journey. Good luck :)

it does seem that a high percentage of children with autism seems to have dietary problems–I have seem some kids do great—others do not respond at all–
there is no telling if it was the diet or a coincidence—or a result of the other therapies
start by making a shopping list–places liek whole foods and trader joes have a lot–wegmans have a good section–
get rid of most traditional kids foods (gold fish, ect)
many products say ‘gluton free ‘casein free’ etc right on teh package–
you must adhre to it strictly –especially in the begiinning
there are a wide variety of foods out there now…
I have never seen a kid ‘recover’ as even if they are sensative to foods–there is more than food to autism symptoms

Here is an article i found

But in my personal opinion there is no recovering from Autism or curing autism .BUT autism is treatanle depending on the severity of the childs Autism

  • The answer above from justmein…is great. I covers everything I was going to type. I find my self resenting a bit the implication the diet’s proponents make that all children will recover on it. I think that plays into parental guilt – something none of us need. I tried the diet with my son and he did not respond to it, but I would encourage you to try it with your son. Treat the diet as if he had celiac disease. Google celiac disease. There are so many good websites. You will need to cut out all dairy as well.

I have a 3 year old son with PDD-NOS. We have tried him on the diet 2 times. The first time was just casien free and the second time was gfcf. I would suggest going to the health food store to buy him “special” food.
My son did not seem to respond to the diet and was losing alot of weight so we took him off it.
BTW, don’t give him soy milk, give him hemp milk(order online from living harvest) if possible. If not hemp milk, then almond milk(from health food store). I’m telling you what the nutrionist told me. Watch for baby wash(Johnson and Johnson is gfcf), no stickers, no playdough(can sink in thru the skin) . If he likes pasta I would try gf noodles and Prego traditional speg. sauce is gfcf. Make sure you use gfcf butter. Oh yeah, Banana Boat is the only gfcf sunscreen that I know of. It is in everything!

    Go to: http://www.gfcfdiet.com
Join gfcf diet yahoo groups to talk with other parents using it. It is hard at first but once you figure it out it becomes second nature.
I would also have a food allergy test ran too if you do not see changes in the child but just going gf/cf.
    Good Luck,
    Marla
