How Many Weeks Did You Wait To Exercise After Giving Birth?
![]() |
I just had my first child last Wednesday, September 3 and I am ready to get rid of these extra pounds I gained during my pregnancy. I had a natural delivery and no pain afterwards. I’ve been on my feet since having my child (grocery shopping, laundry, etc.).
Should I wait until after my six-week doctor’s appointment to exercise??

I don’t remember how long I waited after my son was born. It was 6 years ago. I just know when I started feeling better, you know with energy, I started doing all I can to get exercise. Try calling your doctor’s office and ask a nurse there.
Good Luck and congrats!
I had tons of tearing when I had my son, and well over 100 stitches. I couldn’t walk right for about 2 months, and didn’t start exercising really (other than walking) until he was close to 4 months. I would have loved to have started earlier, but it was too painful for me until then.
I would wait at least the 6 weeks though, just to ensure that you’ve healed. Talk to your doctor at your 6 week checkup to get his / her go ahead on exercise.
Once I felt fine and wasn’t hurting anymore, about a 3 weeks or so I was walking every day, just out walking and pushing the stroller. Take it easy the first couple walks and make sure you don’t push yourself too much. Everyones body heals differently and at a different pace, some people feel ready to start moderate exercise the week they get home, other people it takes much much longer – just listen to your body and pay attention to your pains etc.
Good luck, hope this helps & CONGRATULATIONS on your new baby!!!
Toni Lynne =)
my doctor told me that I could start exercise as soon as I felt able. I started doing sit-ups a week after I had him, and started jogging about 3 weeks post-partum. I must say that in hindsight the jogging was a mistake. My joints were still loose, and I injured my knees, so be careful not to do anything that is high-impact.
If you experience new bleeding or strong cramping stop, but if you feel well going for walks should be a good enough starting place til your 6 week check up. I usually have to wait at least 4 weeks or I end up on the floor cramping and/or bleeding like crazy. Go easy and do not try to do too much. It did take 9 months to get the weight on..take your time and do it right =)
Congrats on the new baby!
You’re a trooper! How cool for you.
I’d still wait the 6 weeks, though, just to be on the safe side… Who knows? You may suddenly feel the pain you’ve been lucky enough to dodge, if you push it! Besides, it seems like you *are* getting some exercise, and keeping busy! Good luck!
yes defiantly – take it easy, that was the last thing on my mind, enjoy just has you are at the moment with your baby, those extra pounds will prob come off with your shopping, laundry, etc as alot of mums don’t even have time for that due to being so tired
In the book, What to Expect When Your Expecting, they tell you exercises that are safe starting at 2 weeks post delivery to 6 weeks post delivery and by then you will have seen your doc and should get the go ahead for full activity.
I did want to right away but as i kept trying to put on clothse every week they would fit better i am 6 weeks next week and an under my pre pregnancy weight already. You really should really wait for your body to readjust. It just went through something major!
I began light exercise 2 days after I had my daughter (non complicated birth) I waited 8 weeks after I had my son (complicated birth)
it’s all in how you feel, if in doubt, ask your doctor.
YES, wait till after your 6 week check up. until then just walk with the stroller. it’s hard to wait, but it helps you heal faster from delivery.
wait at least a month before doing any strenous work or excercise so that you completely heal.
wait 6-week thats better
Yes u should wait til then
