Stopped Drinking Soda… Why So Little Weight Loss?

Fat Loss 4 Idiots

As of right now I sit at 284 pounds. About 3 weeks ago I stopped drinking soda completely and stopped eating fast food. I am now on water only and I eat at home. I started at 295 pounds so at this point I have lost about 11 pounds, most of which I think is water weight.
I went from drinking 4-6 sodas a day (aprx. 600 – 900 calories worth) to drinking none. I thought that with such a dramatic drop in calories that my weight loss would be more dramatic. I can fluctuate 10 pounds when I am on my period alone so I am really not happy at all.
Did I drop too many calories at once? I am going to work out soon. I had started jogging with a friend but it got really cold so now I am joining a gym this week. Will someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

  • First off, congratulations! Drinking soda (not diet) is probably one of the best ways to gain weight. It’s nothing but empty calories. Good for you!
One pound of weight loss is about 2000 calories. If say you were consuming 2000 calories a day and you cut down to 1000 calories for four days straight, you would “hypothetically” lose 2 pounds. This of course is not accurate at all since cutting calories doesn’t necessarily mean you’re losing straight fat but it is a good baseline for determinig how your body will react.
The rule of thumb is this: at your weight you should be losing about 1.5-3 pounds a week for the first month or so of dieting. Your body will somewhat “get used to” the not drinking sodas and eating fast food and it will adjust accordingly. A stall in your weightloss is expected. To overcome the plateau you’ve hit, you’re doing exactly what you should be doing, kicking it up a notch by joining a gym. If you hit a stall again, re-evaluate your habits and kick it up again (i.e., skip that venti frappuccino with extra whip cream every day or whatever). They say for every 20 pounds of weight loss, you’ll hit at least one plateau. The trick is to not give up and just work through it.
Please be cautioned though. Don’t lose TOO much weight too quickly. First off, it isn’t good for your body and for your health. Secondly, if you intake too LITTLE calories, your body will go into starvation mode and you’ll end up gaining weight back. Thirdly, if you lose weight too quickly, your skin won’t “shrink” as well and you’ll end up way flabby all over and you’ll look 10 years older than you are. TRUST me on this one!
When all else fails and you feel like giving up, quick talk to a nutritionist. Maybe they’ll identify something in your lifestyle that you haven’t picked up on.
    Good luck!

You’re doing awesome. Cutting out sodas and fast food is the first step to weight loss. You need to get your metabolism going. Joining a gym and weight lifting will really boost your metabolism. And running is the fastest way to loose weight. Don’t give up. When you join the gym, maybe you could get a trainer for a few sessions and have him/her help you with what you need to do to loose more.
You’re on the right track. You can do it!

Well it all depends on your diet. Are you eating more to fill the space of those calories?
Try eating 1500calories a day for a week, make sure you count everything- fruit etc do count!
Go to the gym 3 times a week for 30mins. Drink lots of water
With this you will lose lots of weight!
    Good luck

well ther are other things that will help you drop wieght too. when you jogging, do 30 min of it four times a week. Dont eat white foods either, like white bread, potatos, bisciuts, etc. Another tip is drink a big glass of water before every meal, that way you get fuller faster. And also with out drinking soda, good work, it will pay off in the long run (two three months), And another tip, is eat a big breakfest, small lunch, and smalller dinner. That way the majority of your calories are burned up during the day, and not counsumed before you go to bed.
    keep in there.
