This May Be A Stupid Question, But Should I Exercise When My Muscles Are Still Sore From Exercising Yesterday?

Fat Loss 4 Idiots

I think I’ve heard that you should exercise hard every day no matter what, but I find that I can do less exercise each day before basically collapsing in pain, and my muscles never heal. What should I do?
How often should I exercise? It can sometimes take more than one day, sometimes up to three, for my muscles to be not sore, but by then I assume the exercise from a few days ago has undone itself.

You do need to take breaks every once in a while. But what causes the pain is that the muscles actually tear during exercises. So I’d say exercise for 3 days, take 2 days off, exercise for another 3 days, take 2 days off. Gives you a break and allows your muscles to heal and build up endurance and strength so that you wouldn’t hurt after every workout.

When you lift a heavy weight the muscle fibers are broken down and must be given adequate time and nutrients to rebuild themselves properly. You literally build muscle in your sleep so make sure you get at least 8 hours every night, this will help you recover quicker and thus making your workouts more effective. As for working out on sore muscles only you can be the judge of your own body, being sore is one thing but being in pain is a whole different ball game. There is nothing wrong with training every day, after a while it will take you longer and longer to get sore so just push through it right now however, NEVER TRAIN INJURED! you can cause serious damage, permanent damage! Hope this helps bro.

  • one tip is alway be persistant when exercising, if you muscles hurt that bad then the next day lessen the reps or amount you do, use muscle relaxers such as a heating pad, hot showers, and even the hot/cold muscle pain ointment, a good nights rest can help muscles relax faster so make sure your not tense when you go to sleep….if anything start alternating exercised, lower body one day and upper body next that way only one half may hurt and has a day to recover

  • You could but I’d advise against it. You need to recuperate your muscles and allow the tissue to form. When you exercise you literally tear the muscle. What you can do is workout your body in isolation, that is do arms one day, lower body the other and alternate. My abs were so effing sore that I had to miss going to the gym and p.e. class and I took aspirin and tried massaging it, nothing worked. You just gotta wait it out and let your body adjust

Well, the idea is to over come the soreness eventually. Maybe you should check out p90x. It has the theory of muscle confusion so your muscles are always confused. But it’s never the same ones day after day. The workouts are always changing .Or you could try varying your workouts. But back to your question. Depends on what your motivation is, and how determined you are. If you want results, yes…do workout..but do cardio..and stretch good. Don’t lift weights if you are sore. If you have a high intensity level, then bring it with all you have. But for the soreness, try ibuprofen. Or a recovery drink (chocolate milk works great for a post workout drink … olympic atheletes use it… google it..)
Like I said, depends on what your routine is each day… and what you want for results, and if you know what you’re doing. Just be safe and smart, don’t do something if you’re going to tear your muscles…. however…do not back down! Always consult a doctor if need be….

  • just cycle ur work outs. for example if u do biceps and triceps on day 1 then go ahead and let them rest for 3 days but dont stop woroking out. so the very next day after doing bis and tris do back and shoulders. day 3 do chest and abs. day 4 do bis and tris again

  • R5 Hotshot:

there is a million schools of thought on this, and your gonna hear lots of different answers. every other day is usually the way to go. if your muscles are still tired, thats ok.

  • Robert:

At least one day between exercising the same muscles is a good idea.
