  • Training is one of the best ways to tire out a dog – make ‘em use that brain!
If your dog knows the name of toys you can hide them and send the dog after them – this is a favorite of Dante’s. I put him in a down/stay in the living room and grab 3 or 4 toys and hide them in different areas of the house (I have a very small house *laughing*). I then go back to him and send him after each one, by name, individually.
If your dog doesn’t know the name of toys – teach her!
In rainy NW Oregon this has worked quite well when the backyard is a swamp and the rain is pouring down.
ETA – Please use extreme caution with a laser pointer. For many dogs this can lead to OCD with shadows and reflections and can lead to digging behavior in your house.
Think about it – the dog is chasing something it can NEVER get!! I would never use one with a dog.

Fetch is good. A lot of time I will throw something upstairs to the second floor (or down) and they will fetch and bring it back up. Up and down steps – you do it a few times and you will definitely burn off some energy.
Another thing would be “puppy push-ups”… This is where you have a treat and you have your dog “sit”, and then lay “down’ – you go up and down several times – see how fast they can go – it definitely tires them out.

Not practical outdoors cos of rain or heat? My friend, dogs need to be walked in all weathers. You just need to adapt the walk such as not so far or fast when its hot and maybe buy a coat for the dog when it rains.
I cant help feeling that this question is through laziness more than anything. I had a medium sized dog for 14 years and we walked him come rain or shine. They need exercise and stimuli, if they dont get it they will become bored.
Get your dog outside and exercise her the way you know you should

I have a great dane & an english mastiff in my house when it is raining I like to play fetch with them. I get a rope and let them play tug a war with each other. Hide treats in toys to let then try to get them out. Look on the internet for different games you can play.

  • clear an area to make it large enough to play fetch or to play tug a war with her. you could also try running around the house (if it is open and not too dangerous ) so that she can still get her running out

  • Mental stimulation is important to the development and happiness of any pup, but it’s absolutely essential for dogs. Take a look at this for some activities, http://www.miniurl.com/15486

I always play fetch indoors at night. Just throw the ball upstairs and after a while of running up and down the stairs, they get pretty tired.

  • fetch
    laser pointer
chase her around the couch (my lab loves that game)
a lot of tricks/commands will tire them out, just make sure you reward her.

  • My dogs are little but we tire them out by throwing their toys across the room for them to fetch. They seem to like it.
