What Would Happen If Americans Changed Their Diet To Vegetarianism?
![]() |
Say Americans began to value vegetables far more than meat, and bit by bit they ate more of a vegetarian diet.
Would cattlemen start a desperate campaign to sell beef, or would they just sell off the cattle and plant broccoli?
Wasn’t it Oprah Winfrey who got sued by the Cattlemen’s Association for telling people about Mad Cow Disease, and advising them to stop eating meat?

Mad Cow disease, well it comes from the feed made from the by-products of animals ground up & mixed with grasses & GM corn & feed to herbivores. Doesn”t take much in this ‘depression” to save money & have sheep, goats, chickens, pigs, cattle, etc. have a higher ratio of protein there are those out there doing what China did with powdered milk. Even our veggies aren’t safe. Lard & petro products are put on fruits & veggies, & with imports, feces from animals & humans end up in the vegetarian diets as well as the parts of bugs, mice, & bacteria in processed vegetarian foods too. That is why 75% of the kosher products are brought by non-Jews, they have to inspect from the seed, the soil, to watching the transport of milk & sterilization of all equipment to avoid cross contamination & minimize blood, bacteria, viruses, bugs & chemicals. Gov’t doesn’t. The red color dye carmine is found in “organic” foods–made from South American beetles. Jello uses pork gelatin. Non-kosher cheeses allow trucks to carry raw eggs then raw milk without sterilizing the truck or equipment.
Consider also the case of Agricultural General Co. v. Ohio Public Interest Group & Amy Simpson (Ct. of Common Pleas, Franklin Co., OH, #97CVC07-7367, July 31, 1997). There, a public interest group and its director endured a year’s worth of anxiety in a food disparagement lawsuit — this, for making true statements about back-dated eggs.
Free speech is subverted by lawsuits seeking to protect economic interests at the expense of frank public discussion concerning serious public health issues. While no statutory food disparagement claim has yet prevailed in court, lawsuits like those noted above suggest how chilling even the threat of such an action can be, even for apples, pears, and potatoes.
Released in July 30, 2009 from the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPInet.org) states: “Under the current system, food manufacturing facilities might be visited by an inspector from the Food and Drug Administration only once every five or 10 years.” Bill to change it to “every six to 12 months for high risk facilities; every 18 months to three years for low-risk facilities; and every five years for warehouses” is still in the works. Kosher inspects daily & reports, but they can’t file suit, they can take their label off or be sued–that is why big commercial farmers fight the kosher & halal labels with higher standards then the gov’t. Even IF YOU KNOW, food is tainted, 13 states passed laws prohibiting food product disparagement after the Alar (a chemical applied to apples) scare in 1989. These are the so-called veggie libel laws. Even if you WIN you will have to pay for all court & fees & it can take yrs.
Heart disease = most from stress. Obese = having to eat carbs when real poor (check gov’t pantries) & not being able to afford fresh & good but expensive imported fruits & veggies. GM corn syrup is cheap. We can use hemp for oil (see Argentina), not GM corn that kills butterflies, bees & diabetics.
Most people eat for the sake of the pleasure and their taste buds but as we become more aware and knowledgeable more and more people are becoming vegetarian. In the higher ages we will know greater health, vitality and awareness. There is nothing wrong with eating meat but it is a huge waste of resources and land to raise cattle over grains and vegetation. When more people become aware of the limitations of meat production and it waste of time and resources we will back way off from eating it. Those who say we need the protein should consider what Thearou had to say of it. He chided the farmer who said that and pointed out that the oxen that pulled the farmers plow had strong bones from adequate protein while eating only grass.
Well, heart disease would go down, diabetes would be more controlled, children would be healthier from a younger age and have those good eating values instilled from youth instead of having to relearn them at an older age. People would have more energy and look better. Although, I will say that not eating fish is a bad bad idea. There is no veggie that contains Omega 3 acids, and they are necessary for heart and brain development and health. They are also fantastic in warding off cancerous cells before they get a grip on the body.
I will say I am a veggie who eats fish, call that hypocritical if you may, but I see it as wise. I am not iron deficient and I need those Omega 3s in my diet for various reasons.
I am also a supporter of animal protection. I hate animal factories, they are heartbreaking.
I believe cattlemen would be desperate. And any other factory farm in America would be desperate and lower prices of their meat. But in this economic crisis we’re in, the lowered prices of meat would make everybody buy it because it’s “cheap”.
Personally, I really don’t see America going Veg. Even though most of our population is obese (some people are even classified as super morbidly obese), and we’re just so used to buying fast food and eating grease drenched, bad quality food we’re never going to give it up.
That’s a pretty big “what if”. But, if it did happen, I think the cattle men would stay in livestock. I think they would just shift end use. Perhaps leather goods, milk etc…. Most of the land use by livestock is not suited or sustainable for farming. So no broccoli planted. As for Oprah. She was sued for saying to stop eating beef because you could get mad cow disease. You can not get the disease by eating beef.
When agricultural products become unsellable they dispose of them. Excess milk gets dumped into the sea or down salt mines. Excess animals are slaughtered and rendered or just shot and buried in pit or landfills. The same thing goes for plants. Ethanol fuel is just a way of getting rid of excess corn to drive the prices up. In the states the government actually pays farmers to do nothing so their crops don’t flood the market.
Most grazing land is worthless for anything else. The reason they raise cows on it is because it’s too expensive to irrigate.
They already do desperate things to make people think being a vegetarian is bad. They tell us we need protein and the only way to get it is to eat a dead animal.
It was Oprah and I think that’s just sad. I can’t believe they sued her over that.
-There would be more grain for the poor countries (we use most of our grain crops to feed our cattle and food animals)
-There would be less pollution (cow farms emit more Co2 than cars)
-Colon cancer may or may not be less frequent statistically
-Amidst other health conditions depending on whether or not Americans were radically re-educated on health or not
they would be more healthy and smart everything would really start going the right way in this world
please answer imine SOMEONEhttp://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…
Never!!!!
there would be so many cows wandering the streets and stuff, it would be like india! there is nothing wrong with eating meat, i really dont understand why everyone is like “eww meat is ickkky!”
May become more pious, less arrogant in assuming, in the illusion, that they are the world!
McDonalds would start deep frying vegetables and Americans would stay fat.
If Americans had to change to vegetarianism, the South would die out.
we’d all b much healthier and all meat producers would have to find another means of earning a living ,except for milk producers
Hahaha its a nice thought
Maybe people would become a little healthier but that’s about it
Because there is still ice cream and sweats and deep fried veggies! Lol
Lol we should bring this idea to the UK. We’re getting there too.
LOL at the second answer lol. Imagine fried broccoli.
The doctors would might end up on the unemployment line because everybody would be so healthy.HMMMM! Nice thought.
There’d be a lot more Canadians and Mexicans
They will become healtier than they now
MCFO your an idiot. Why would the South die?
you would have saved 5 points
hell would freeze over
we wouldn’t weigh the earth down anymore
here would not be enough vegetables to sustain everyone, first off, nor would there be enough to last for the time between tomorrow and in a few months when the now large number of farmers collect their first massive harvest, so there would likely be food riots and deaths unless the government took over all food distribution and rationed everything out to people.
What would we do with the hundreds of thousands of live animals? They are domesticated, if they are let free they will become fodder for other preying animals like wolves, potentially increasing their numbers or violent tendencies during subsequent years due to an abundance of nutrition. What would all the farmers do, start farming vegetables? Not all farmers know or want to do that. This also requires much more land, which needs to be prepared, etc. If America suddenly went vegetarian, I would expect them to invade Canada or Mexico for its suitable growing land.
Vegetarian also stands to be defined here. Does this mean no meat derivative products? There are a lot of those in many things, even jello is animal hooves. I would think it would be more likely that people would go vegan instead of vegetarian, to totally cut animal consumption from their lives versus just not eating meat and continuing to raise and use animals. So now the leather industry is affected, amongst all others who use animals for byproducts. No more horse glue, non-artificial paintbrushes, etc.
I am of course interested in how everyone just suddenly becomes a vegetarian, as the method for this could result in a lot of different behaviours. For instance, if it was a government forced policy and people didn’t want to become vegetarians, there would be riots, looting, huge numbers of people leaving the country, maybe even escalating levels of violence depending on how these events were treated. In the same thought, if it were forced on people, there would be resistance groups, underground meat smuggling, and a world of people who don’t like being oppressed.
I think the secondary effects from this happening are quite large as well. People leaving the country for other less dictatorial countries means a lot of quitting people from all areas. People simply needing to become veggie farmers to keep up with the demand would have a similar effect. Perhaps the number of job opportunities would lower unemployment, but I think the massive number of people leaving (if they were allowed to leave, that is) would be substantial enough to cause a bump.
Edit: I just can’t see the entire world doing this. We already deal with starvation issues now when we do eat meat, we’d be dealing with way more if only America went vegetarian, let alone the entire world. Plus it’s a huge deprivation of freedom, and this cannot be ignored, I can’t see how every country would be persuaded to do this…
We would become weaker in strength and unable to lift heavy items, our bones would be easy to brake. honestly it ANT gonna happen. People in the U.S. like meat as do I. Raised on it, eat it, want and it’s healthy for you. your body needs it. Butchered many a deer, hog and beef in my long life…that’s why most Americans are stronger than other people around the world outside maybe the Sweeds or Germans. And Oprah is the last person I wanna listen too. ROCK ON Cattleman’s Association!!!!! YEAH! I eat the red meat the other white meat. Bears, elk, snake, alligator, frog, and fowl, and Coons. And Yes by God Ted Nugent is a hunter too. Rock on baby….Oh and BTW…My grand mother is still living at 109.5 eating the grease and pork and beef every day! At least I know what my Cattle are eating and being treated with. She also drinks nothing but Mt.Dew too. At 109 she still tough…never broke an arm or anything all her life…nor have I.
