I am a personal trainer and I have all of my clients fill out a food log/journal. Here are a few things your journal should be showing you. How much protein, fat, and carbs consumed as well as total daily calories. Looking at the foods you ate, you should be able to see if you have eaten enough fruits and vegetables. Lastly you should be breaking your journal down into times of the day, and this will show you how you proportioned your meals are, and when you typically eat.
What all this means: Once you have logged a few days, you can figure out your average daily calories consumed, and then adjust that number in the future based on your goals. If you are staying the same weight, you will want to decrease your total daily calories by about 500 calories a day, this will result in a one pound a week weight loss. If you are not eating enough fruits and vegetables, you can work on eating more. Look at the amount of food you ate at various times throughout the day, and see if you eat 4-6 small meals a day. If you don’t, doing so will help keep your metabolism up and provide you with more energy.
