Feeling Stuck in Weight Loss? Break Free by Breaking Your Mental Patterns

Maybe you are at a place where you are feeling stuck in weight loss or you are having difficulty even getting on the weight loss bandwagon.  This is an uncomfortable place to be and your feelings inside can range from a feeling of apathy (“I just don’t care anymore.”) to a feeling of anger (“This body of mine can’t lose weight!”).

This is often a time you begin looking for an answer within and you might even delve into your past to try to uncover some happening from your childhood that has carried over into adulthood and is making your weight loss a struggle.  While your childhood does have a lot of influence on your behaviors later in life, you can easily spend too much time trying to figure out how why you are the way you are.  This causes you to create a story of who you “think” you are.

It is important to remember that this is only a story – it is not who you are.  Your story is a collection of memories about past actions you have taken, habits you formed, mistakes you made and victories you accomplished and while these past events shape your character, they do not define you today.

This is often overlooked when you get too focused on our story and as a result your story can become your identity which will often lead you to resign to certain thoughts and beliefs about yourself.  For instance, if you grew up in an overweight family and you were heavy from a young age you might create the story that says, “I have always been fat and always will be; it is how I was born.”  If you have a hard time resisting baked goods and you equated baked goods with love as you were growing up you might hold onto a story that says, “I can’t resist chocolate cake.”

These types of thoughts will influence your actions if you do not bring them into conscious awareness and begin to question them and until you begin to question if these thoughts are actually true you will remain “stuck”.

These story statements might seem very real or justified to you but they are only thoughts that you created based on past experiences and they will make your weight loss attempts very difficult. 

The great thing is that these thoughts were created by you and can be let go of and changed through simple methods.  If you are feeling stuck in weight loss begin to notice the thoughts you have that are making weight loss difficult.  For best results write them down then with calm acceptance ask yourself if that thought is true and if it has to be true for your future.  Sometimes you will answer yes but if you continue to explore the thought you will feel it start to lose strength.
