Low fat diet and breast cancer prevention – what evidence elusive

In 2006, the results of the largest projects in the world of low-fat diet have been published (see link at the end). There was a study funded by the U.S. government’s 48,835 postmenopausal women in the multicenter prospective randomized clinical trial, known as the Health Initiative of Women randomized controlled trial of dietary change. The study was conducted from 1993 to 2005, at 40 centers across the country. Volunteers were randomly assigned either to a group with low-fat diet (19,541 women) or regular diet group (29,294 women). After eight years of follow-up studies of large and expensive find any significant differences in the incidence of breast cancer postmenopausal women who have been invited to a diet low in fat and those that still have their usual food. On the other hand, these results suggest that the transition to a low-fat diet may reduce the risk of breast cancer for women who have a diet rich in fat from the outset. According to most experts, could be the causes of this study showed no significant advantages: 1) a small number of women reached the target of 20% fat. This scheme is a “low fat” pattern can not be really low in fat. Like most women do not reach the goal of reducing fat, this study can be proven that the approach of the intervention did not work. He has not shown that the true low-fat diet does not protect you from breast cancer. The latter only 20% of calories from fat is very difficult to do. This means that if you have 2000 calories per day, only 400 calories can come from fat. This is not surprising that less than one-third of women achieved this goal after the first year, and only 14% continued to achieve the goal after 6 years. Because so few women qualified for the study, this means that we really do not know how low-fat diet affects the risk of breast cancer 2.) Rations were recorded, and few can make them unreliable. This study is based on reports of women’s writing what they ate, what can not be an accurate reflection of true absorption. This work has been done on the occasion. No daily food diary or journal have been taken and tested. Most of us are not proud to admit in an interview or questionnaire that we violated the rules and don ‘have not yet acceded to the prescribed diet. “Thus, there may be a tendency to underestimate the amount of fat actually consumed. 3) other change than a diet low in fat. The study does not separate the effects of reducing intake of fat from the effects of increasing fruit and vegetable servings. Women in the low-fat group ate almost 2 servings per day of fruits and vegetables than women in the regular diet group and about one serving of cereal. 4) The term thereafter. While 48,835 women a lot of people, eight years is not much time tracking. a diet low in fat 15 or 20 years, can provide higher profits and show the close relationship between dietary fat and risk of breast cancer. 5) body mass index. In this study, 74% of women classified as overweight BMI at baseline. Thus, we do not know if low fat, may offer advantages to women of normal weight at the beginning. 6) All in postmenopausal women. It is possible that dietary fat plays an important role in the upbringing of young premenopausal women. It is logical that your diet during the first 50 years of his life may affect at risk of developing cancer in the second half of his life. This study does not solve the problem. 7) the type of fat has not been specified. There are three main types of fats: saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. In this study, women were asked only to reduce body fat. They not asked to consider various types of fat and said that the reduction of saturated fats, can offer more than good health to reduce saturated fats. Saturated fats found only in foods of animal origin and types of fats that increase blood cholesterol. Trans fats ( also known as trans fatty acids, saturated) fat man. (oil plants to change the form of margarine and vegetable oil, 2, which are trans fats.) Trans fats are also added to food packaging. Saturated fats do “bad cholesterol in the blood ( low density lipoprotein, or LDL) and reduce the level of “good” cholesterol (high density lipoprotein, or HDL) level. Mono-unsaturated and polyunsaturated found in plant foods, like vegetables, nuts and seeds and oils made from these nuts and seeds (canola, corn, soybeans). Omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids. In addition to vegetables, nuts and grains, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are also present in cold water fish such as tuna, salmon and mackerel. Some studies have shown that eating products with monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated, or can help reduce “bad cholesterol”. mono-and polyunsaturated and can keep your triglycerides low. Triglycerides are a form of fat in the blood. 8) None of the women in both groups were invited to change their behavior health, such as exercise, drinking or smoking. These known risk factors for breast cancer were not stopped, and may mask the benefit of eating less fat. 9) This study focuses on a diet low in fat, it does not go overweight or obese condition with normal weight. Eating less fat, while remaining constantly in fat can help everybody! Since that study cost about half a billion dollars, it is not likely that the trial of alternative clinical interventions of life scale, it will be soon, especially in the current U.S. economy.
