Can You Target Fat Loss To A Certain Area?
Unfortunately, no. Genetics determine our overall body shape, and we can’t choose where our bodies store fat. Generally speaking, women fall into one of a few basic shapes: pear-shaped women store fat on their hips/bum/thighs, apple-shaped women in the bust and abdomen, hourglass-shaped women in their bust and hips/bum, and rectangular or ruler-shaped women all over, with similar bust/waist/hip measurements. (One study found that most women fall into this ‘rectangular’ shape category, followed by pear-shaped women.)
While apple-shaped women should take pride in their slim hips and legs, they need to be cautious, as abdominal fat is the most dangerous fat to have, as it puts one at a greater risk for diabetes and heart disease. Studies suggest that women who eat more mono-unsaturated fats (like those found in olives/olive oil, nuts and avocados) and whole grains (as opposed to sugar and refined grains) tend to store less weight on their abdomen. For overall weight loss, cardiovascular exercises such as running and aerobics are helpful, and strength exercises (squats, lunges, sit-ups, arm weights, Pilates) can help tone muscles, but again, unfortunately can’t reduce fat from a particular area.
